Already up to 32.2C at the vineyard. Never seen anything like it. Before 9am, and it's a hotter temperature than the station had ever recorded (admittedly it's only been up a year) before yesterday.


Same time yesterday it was 27C.

I was trying to find out what the Cambridge Botanic Garden reading was yesterday and.... no readings since Saturday! Why would they stop recording in the previous record holding location just when a new record was looking likely? Utter madness!

They tweeted about taking a reading on Sunday so I'm sure they haven't stopped. Must be a problem in updating that page.

The daily max is actually recorded at 9am (10am BST) each day and then forwarded to the Met Office. So if a new record was set, it wouldn't be officially known until after 10am today. Although you would think someone would have gone and had a little look yesterday

Think there are going to be some quick rises and high temps by lunchtime today but still have a feeling that 40C is not going to be reached today.
Unfortunately there is then going to be a whole load of twaddle about how everyone has overeacted and the twitterati will be in meltdown.

I think there is a good argument to be made for more funding in the UK. Quite frankly there are too many gaps in the reporting network and it would be helpful if reporting processes were standardised.

I quite agree. Leicester for example doesnt even have a reporting station. So many gaps.

I remember in my childhood being told that Tonbridge held the record for the highest temperature recorded in England, but (IIRC) since then this record has been discounted as invalid because it was taken at an amateur weather station in a garden in the north part of the town, with a non-standard local situation which most likely caused the temperature to read too high.  I don't know when this decision was taken, or what record at which location was deemed to be the official maximum instead.

Yesterday drive from Nuneaton to Birmingham NEC Resort world to pick up my wife had reached 38C in the car to 36C so that show some areas are hotter and some cooler, 38C outside Nuneaton, 36C in Meriden and then 37C when arrived at NEC.


30C here as the tree shadow now 1\3 in my garden by so 10am it will be fun then the rise will go very fast like yesterday from 10am to 2pm before clouds came.

You'd think that at a minimum every city in the UK should have a weather station, and every town above a certain size (perhaps with a proviso that it's not needed if there is another station within X miles).


However if they started adding lots of urban weather stations, the records would be massively skewed by UHI effects, and you'd never hear the end of it.

Kind of dry equivalent of foehn. With foehn you have saturated air upslope, rain/condensation, then dry adiabatic warming downslope. With the downs on days like this it's more that the dry higher air gets mixed down to ground level, warming up at DALR as it descends. (Xioni please correct me if I got the description wrong).

You won't have heard from me as I was sound asleep in my bedroom, with the portable a/c on - it was complaining loudly, but managed to hold on.


Tonight's when I'm going to the Holiday Inn, but it's in Sittingbourne, not Leysdown! (There are no chain hotels on Sheppey, oddly.)
