It's still 5 days of  extreme cold weather with severe blizzards over Christmas, I would take that every year without disappointment.  If you want constant snow and cold temps you have to go further North.  Quebec city has a fantastic climate and warm incursions are much more limited with deep snow on the ground all winter.  Go SW to Montreal and it's a bit more dodgy and then Toronto even more so.
Quebec and Newfoundland have the best N America winter weather IMO but I would also take Buffalo and sacrifice some melt for the extreme lake effect snow.

Yes as Toronto is lot further south and more less snow over London and Windsor.  When I went there before it was crap snow cover but more when we went to Niagara Falls as there some lake effects snow and more deeper.

Toronto also sit by the lake but no effect since the winds always blow from the west over the land. Need SE winds to that but very rare so Buffalo get the most.

As much as I like snow, that Buffalo blizzard is just terrifying. It’s the worst I’ve ever seen outside of Antarctica. I’m more than happy to watch it from a distance. 

My ideal climate would probably be costal New England - warm but not too hot summers, cold but not frigid winters. Occasional snow but not the 80 inch ridiculousness of the Great Lakes.

As much as I like snow, that Buffalo blizzard is just terrifying. It’s the worst I’ve ever seen outside of Antarctica. I’m more than happy to watch it from a distance.

The warnings are in a different league over there 'Travel will be inpossible'. Like one Buffalo resident said it's ok people saying they are used to it, but you can't really get used to paralysis of everything.
 
Noticed some Estate agents list a benefit of the North of Buffalo as being less prone to extreme snowfalls as the streamers usually effect the south of the city. The reverse has happened with this event.

This weather system affected many states, all the way down to the south too. My daughter's currenty in Tampa, Florida and they awoke on Saturday morning to a temperature of just 1c, she's used to temperatures like this but her boyfriend and his family are not!

wonder if it was more the rapidity and bad timing but a lot of the images of snowfall in Buffalo doesn't look that bad.  I have a feeling I’ve seen NA / Canada areas having had worse in the past. Perhaps the areas I saw had already cleared some of the snow.

True that some of the "lake effect" falls may well have been deeper - I was in the USA when they had one in Nov/Dec in 2002 (IIRC) that was over 30 inches but these are usually when the temperature is around 0C (before the lake freezes over)

In this instance the temperature was way below 0C and there was a gusting wind at about 50-60mph to provide a huge wind-chill factor so the risks of freezing to death or suffering heart attack was much higher and that is what has happened

Buffalo received over 49” of snow in three days. Combine that with the wind and cold mentioned above and the reason for the extent of the problems and sadly fatalities becomes clearer.

Watching Live from Namibia Desert cam as today 1st day of the year is thunderstorms now.  Wow really nice to hear the real storm sounds from my wife's new speaker and booster bar making me feel that I am under the UK thunerstrom that I used to see in the past.

Interesting. I would have thought that the Republic of Ireland would have been the mildest place in the Northern Hemisphere winter season rather than the UK as it is a separate country, and since the mild SW's which ruin so many of our winters here in the UK will usually reach the Republic of Ireland before they reach here.
 
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

California, normally considered to have a Mediterranean climate, getting at least two storms which wouldn't be out of place up around Iceland. Not a surprise if you've been keeping an eye on the jet stream which has been consistently strong and well south across the Pacific this year.

Mammoth Lakes has had 650cm of snow so far this season already(think annual average is 500cm or so) with massive totals expected in the coming days from the storm moving in shortly.

Very good over there while poor Europe suffer with little or not snow.  I went to check St Anton that used to be the highest snow depth for Europe Alps is very shocking mere 20cm?  and just freezing temps.  That place used to reach 500-600cm every winter in the 90's when I view the Snow reports on German TV ARD19 channel via Astra every day.  They put up from 1st November to 31st April then taken down in summer months. 

With lot of rain in the north California is going to move south to give Death Valley a very soaking wet week, not 1 day wonder but whole wet week with some days at 100% rain and snow on the higher parts, they already had 2 rain days this month so likely to be very wet month for their standard but temperatures are on the warm side at 68-70F despite the rain due to winds from the southern side, not northerly.  Might give some relief for Lake Mead and Hoover Dam refilling a bit from lot of rain.
