Decidedly interesting op run - hope it’s not a weird weekend bug!

Upper air temps aren't notable, but synoptically this is one of all time great GFS runs for cold weather fans. Absolutely astonishing.

GFS a little lonesome this evening. The differences in a weeks time stark who has it closest?

Reckon we might see bit of a backtrack on GFS or will it be stubborn? Nothing would surprise me

18Z GFS is a very wintry run for Scotland.

WX charts show week 1 with near normal temps across Europe though cold in Scandinavia. In week 2, though the push of cold air from the NE is still forecast and cooler conditions for Europe including Britain generally, it's not quite as massive an incursion as previously shown. Rain/snow in week 1 generally across Europe, though drier for SW Britain, France and Spain. Much the same distribution in week 2 though smaller totals.

GFS Op - current LP taking its time to move off SE-wards to the Adriatic but by Wed 22nd a well-defined HP cell 1030mb in the SW Approaches transitioning to a N-S ridge in the Atlantic and allowing strong N-lies to affect all of Britain Sat 25th in the circulation of a large LP in the E Baltic. That LP slowly fills, the winds decrease, and the HP is back to the SW 1035mb Fri 1st. This time it ridges E-wards, S Britain stays under the high but N Britain is under W-ly influence by Mon 4th.

ECM - Instead of the N-S ridge above, pressure drops in the Atlantic and creates a broader N-ly flow Sat 25th, though not as strong. By Wed 29th the HP has re-asserted itself to the NW and the forecast is converging with GFS (though ECM throws in a locally deep LP off Portugal as an extra)

GEM - keeps pressure high close to the S of Britain and any N-lies are confined to Scandinavia and W-lies for Britain. As the week progresses cold weather may affect N Scotland, but this as a result of LPs tracking across from Greenland with W/NW winds rather than direct N-lies.

GEFS - temps briefly mild Thu 24th, then a big and abrupt drop in temp in all ens members to ca 5-7C below norm. Op, Control and mean then agree on a slow recovery but still a little below norm Tue 5th, though a wide spread of outcomes develops e.g Fri 1st in the S from 12C below norm to 8C above. Mostly dry for now, rain (snow at altitude?) showing up in most ens members from Sun 26th ( a day or two earlier in Scotland) but not especially heavy, except possibly the SW.

ECM and GFS both showing a bit of a cold plunge. GEM not interested in the slightest!

I'm not too fussed if it's mild and mostly dry or cold and mostly dry. I'm just hoping we're seeing the end of the autumn monsoon.

Its certainly a welcome change to be on the sillycoaster this early on in the winter!

Unfortunately looks like any snow is mostly going to be limited to Scotland at this stage, but 'stuff coming into cold air' could bring something more widespread!

2023/2024 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):
29/11 (-6), 30/11 (-6), 02/12 (-5), 03/12 (-5), 04/12 (-3), 16/01 (-3), 18/01 (-8), 08/02 (-5)

Total: 8 days with snow/sleet falling.

2022/2023 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):

18/12 (-1), 06/03 (-6), 08/03 (-8), 09/03 (-6), 10/03 (-8), 11/03 (-5), 14/03 (-6)

Total: 7 days with snow/sleet falling.

2021/2022 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):

26/11 (-5), 27/11 (-7), 28/11 (-6), 02/12 (-6), 06/01 (-5), 07/01 (-6), 06/02 (-5), 19/02 (-5), 24/02 (-7), 30/03 (-7), 31/03 (-8), 01/04 (-8)
Total: 12 days with snow/sleet falling.

The switch gets flipped on the turn of the month, if trends continue could we see a 2009 or even 2010 style event?

12Z GFS sticking with the theme. Looks like properly opening the floodgates right at the end of the run too.

Even the party pooper GEM flirts with an easterly by the end.

UKMO not really on board though, the heights never really rise to the north.

ICON and GEM aren't interested either. UKM looks quite cold in the north for a couple of days and chilly in the south next Saturday, but milder air quickly returns.
