Final December number 7.01c

If your going to win then do it in style.

Dingle Rob takes the award not only as the December monthly winner but also as the overall CET competition champion for 2023.

Many congratulations.

Rob was the 7th different competition leader in 2023.

Spare a thought for Bolty who led from September to November but ended up as runner up.

Its the 3rd time in recent years that the leader at the end of November failed to hold on; after JMM2005 last year and Col a few years earlier.
In all cases the November leader went too low with their December prediction

Caz, who led the way early in the year finished 3rd.

Thank you. I have to say I just went with Brian's Winter Forecast and was very surprised to see I was somewhat out on a limb.

Thanks Frank for running the comp this year and good luck everyone for 2024.

Cheers Frank. Thanks for this and a Happy New Year.

I'm so glad I ended up at the top of the table (when turned upside down, of course).

Well done to Dingle Rob. Commiserations to Bolty  - unlucky to see the very mild weather hanging in there in central parts when it was forecast to cool off for a while at least.

The slate is now wiped clean and we start afresh!

Thanks to Frank for running this competition over the last couple of years

Crunching the numbers for the rest of the month, based on Google weather, it is looking like we'll be in Redmoons territory for end of month (i.e. somewhere in the mid 6s). Obviously a lot can change between now and then, especially when you see that the UK is on the boundary between very mild and much colder air.

Assuming we get a CET of 6.5C, this will be the 2nd warmest CET year ever recorded. Only 2022 would beat it. It would also be only the 2nd year with an overall CET at or above 11C.
Including 2023 there have been 13 years with a CET of 10.5C or above. 10 of those have been since 2002. The other 3 were 1949, 1990 and 1999.

The warming trend is clear and dramatic.

As mentioned by others, it meant that we have had 2 years in a row with an annual CET greater than 11C. Based on averaging each monthly average CET, 2023 comes in slightly cooler at 11.08C against 11.13C in 2022.
