An improving day here in Hawick.

After a cloudy start to the day, the Sun has broken through in increasing amounts although it is still rather breezy.

Currently around 22°C here in Hawick.
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.

Although the rainfall radar echos were intense both north and south of here, we missed the worst of it. We had some rain and thunder and lightning, but nothing unusual, sadly a bit tame. It is noticeably cooler now…. In Fetcham Surrey

Yateley's in the 18-22mm zone of rain in the last 12 hours... but a few miles west it's 48-60, and a few miles SW has 76-96mm of rain accumulated - torrential.

The heaviest though is Fairford, which has seen between 200 and 250mm of rain in the last 6 hours! Yup, that's roughly 8-10 inches of rain today. Here's the 12-hour radar total via NetWeather's radar page:

We had a dew point earlier of 21.7C!! Very impressive for our location.

After yesterday unpleasant dew point (around 20C?) here it's a much fresher start to the day with a low of 17.9C
Sunny again after yesterday's cloudy spell in the afternoon with light airs.

Wow. Sounds like there was more than 20mm back home though. One person locally measured three inches in 45 mins. Think  that was Hartley Wintney or Hopk.

Partly cloudy here this morning, with damp ground first thing due to overnight rain... the remnants of the storms eventually reached here, but fizzled remarkably quickly, going from >10mm/hour rates a couple of miles away to just 0.8mm/hour here. We ended up with 0.4mm of rain from it.
It's currently 18.7, dew 18.0, with an overnight low of 15.4 (which, despite being well above average, felt pleasant compared to the previous two nights' 19C). Yesterday's high was 24.0 and we'll smash that effortlessly today.

Could the radar have overstated the rain around Fairford? That amount, even if in a limited area, should surely have made the headlines this morning? Not mentioned e.g. on the Gloucestershire Live website

It wasn't anaprop, as there were clearly defined torrential downpours not just there, but elsewhere. The only other alternative would be hail, but even then as the storms were so slow-moving there should have been something said - my old Kent Weather Book has plenty of wintry-looking summer pictures as the result of prolonged hail storms!

File it under "odd", I guess.

30.2c the high yesterday in Wisley.  A run of high temps in this spell of 29.6c, 32c , 31.1c and 30.2c not bad at all.
Uk has now had six 30c days - 2 in June ,3 in July and 1 in August.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Borders continues to be the place to be because although there is some cloud around, there are still some decent sunny spells as well as there usually always is these days whenever I come down here during the summer.

There is some rain in the forecast for here today but not until around teatime and the temperature is forecast to reach around 21°C here once again.

Currently around 16°C here here in Hawick.

Weather Underground might help with the Fairford mystery - no stations in the heaviest area (of course), but two close to it reporting 57mm and 69mm respectively. I would expect there would be local hotspots with much more than that, the way these things work!

I said earlier on this morning that the temperature was forecast to reach 21°C but even as early as 10am BST (09:00 UTC), the temperature has already jumped up to around 21°C here in Hawick and so, these forecasts may well have very badly underestimated today's predicted maximum temperatures already.

I don't think that you have too much to worry about up there though.

I've just had a look at the latest radar map and there doesn't appear to be much to that line of showers which you mentioned.

Furthermore, the fact that Edinburgh is currently experiencing a dry summer shows that it hardly ever rains there anyway as most on here may well know from my previous posts on here.

The data for here further emphasises that. There are no official stations close to where I am just now in Hawick and the only station in the Borders is at Charterhall where a total of  91.0 mm of rain was recorded during July which actually makes last month the second wettest month of this year there so far.

That is not all that far off double Edinburgh Gogarbank's total for the same month and adds up to an exceptionally wet month down here overall. Because of that, those of you up there can't really have any real complaints in that regard.

The demise of the recent warm spell seem to have arrived earlier than expected with low cloud and hill mist preventing temperatures rising from the current 19 C but still humid at 90% H. The sun may yet still come out by this afternoon but we'll be starting to feel the SW breeze by that point.

Incidentally, only had a weedy 0.2 mm yesterday much to the disappointment of my reseeded lawn in the back yad.

This bit of SE England reached 24.6 earlier, albeit it's gone down to 23.4 as some cloud's moving in from the west. Hopefully that'll cap temperatures for the next few hours and avoid a very warm day! (MetO raw has 28C here this afternoon).

There's no wind to speak of and the dewpoint remains exceptionally high - 19.3.
