I think it's a case of damage limitation for the many of us who went 15C plus this month. Looks like the CET plummet will transition to a gradual decline by the weekend but it's not looking warm enough to see it start to rise significantly again. At least not yet.

Second half of Sept could have some pleasant maxes (between 18c and 21c within the CET zone) as high pressure to the NE dominates.

Obviously, clear nights could lead to single-digit mins, so that needs keeping an eye on.

And there's always the possibility that the high could retrogress, as Retron explained, which would open the door to another cold blast at the end of the month.
