Early Thursday morning still threatens a period of snow for a good few of us.

I think without doubt this is one of the hardest situs I've ever come across. Because its basically 95% rain, but I think there will be some snow down to lower levels. But forecasting it will be an absolute nightmare. Indeed for NE england I am currently thinking of a rain to snow to rain event. I'll try and do one of my snow distribution forecast maps tonight when the 12zs are out.

It's quite impressive to see that the snow that fell overnight is still there currently and in fact my road is still snow covered.

In the last few years I've started to appreciate the importance of dp to snow sublimation - in fact it's probably more important than absolute temp both for falling and surviving snow cover.

Sadly from here on in I think it may be just a high ground only event but I guess there's a chance for some if the precipitation is heavy enough and the wind mixing not too much?

Had a very slight covering here first thing this morning, but it soon melted in the sun, looked like a mixture of hail and snow had falled during the early hours - an icy mix for sure. I drove over the hills to Yorkshire today and there was a good inch or so along the highest parts of the M62 motorway above 300m.

Don't know how to judge this having been at work all day. I'm surprised this is being hinted at as as strong a possibility as it is. Wednesday looked distinctly unlikely for snow in the SE to me, with that big warm sector. What's changed?

Rain started as snow and sleet quickly turned to rain and very heavy at that and just had a white flash of lighting and rumble of thunder. Snow now thawing at 2.3 degrees.
