Given the very unsettled conditions forecast and the severe weather warnings for strong winds and snow from the Met Office I thought a dedicated thread for reports of wind or snow related conditions or impacts might come in handy.

So if you have either to report please do so here

(if not please don't post to say it's a nice calm mild typical December day here 😝 )

Already windy here on Skye, with a peak just of 57mph earlier this afternoon. Just now average speeds are blowing force 7 gusting near severe gale 9. I have battened down everything in the garden, not that in winter we leave much about that could blow around us being used to frequent high winds.

It is set to get pretty wild later....take care.

Cold here and fairly calm at the minute after a windy day for my sheltered inland location.
It can be pretty lively with a westerly funnelling through Glenmoriston. Normally have to move from our west facing bedroom downstairs if its really bad. Got the generator ready but not expecting it to be as bad as December 8th 2012, 3 days without power. Hoping to go to Stoer Head lighthouse tomorrow to see some big waves and get some good pictures but a bit worried about the snow on the roads. It will be far more lively on Skye.
Hi Martyn, We have new neighbours here in Dalchreichart who know of you, they used to live at Shulista . Tell me stories of chickens blowing away in storms.
Currently only 8.1mph and highest gust today only 17.7mph, temperature 4.1 but only 3 degrees half hour ago.
Max today 5 degrees

Martin in terms of snow it may be mild enough for it not to be an issue tomorrow morning first thing as the cold air does not cut in until later in the morning.

Good idea, Michael, but please no snow pics, you'll only make us jealous.

Seriously though looking nasty for tomorrow morning - Tay Road Bridge may have to close completely - that's the local indicator of real stormy conditions.

Its starting look a little scary now that's for sure. The last storm in December 8th 2011 , I was heading for lunch at a friend in Spean Bridge got caught between falling trees and actually saw some big trees come down at the north end of the Loch Lochy at the height of that storm , the Loch was like a boiling cauldron never seen anything like it before. Sure hope its not as bad as that it was pretty frightening.

Definately a wild spell for the NE, with local funneling generating gusts in excess of 90mph in a few places I would think.
Fortunately, it'll ease away tomorrow evening when the snow showers arrive.

A short sharp shock for the far NE and one I shall follow with interest.

Parameters suggest a rapid fall in upper air temps from mid morning. Snow potential midday to midnight.

My own peak gust 99.5mph, coroborated by my second anemometer (different manufacturer) reading 90mph right now. My wind speed graph is still increasing. Power on, no drops but we have lightning / flashes across the sky (no thunder so could be debris hitting overhead lines).

Incidentally these are my highest wind readings since I started wetaher watching with my own equipment, about 6 years ago.

My first Scottish storm in my new flat on the top floor of an exposed tenemant block and its very noisy! Wind is coming in long powerful gusts with lashing rain. My main worry is the squall on the cold front as it blasts through late morning.

Our power supply is now unstable, which is remarkable since we have seen a pummelling this morning (near 100mph). Over to the laptop to make reports soon I think.

Could be the squall line. Peak gust 102mph and 97.7mph right now on my two anemometers. Temps dropping like a stone...

Ouch Martyn, that is both impressive and worrying.

I am also worried about the warning issued here for this morning and the associated chief forecaster's view (for Aberdeen and the Shire specifically)

"As an intense low moves into the North Sea, recent evidence points to a focus for strong winds moving over, or very close to, northeast Scotland during this morning, with a brief period of very damaging winds likely."

"Winds are expected to gust to more than 80 mph as they swing northwesterly around mid-morning, with peak gusts perhaps more than 90 mph in exposed parts. Winds will ease during the afternoon."

This must be the worst storm I can remember in 12 years of living in the Highlands. We have had thunder and sheet lightning on and off and lights are flashing very frightening. Highest gust in my sheltered location is 57mph but met office has altnaharra at 93mph. My greenhouse is shredded and I have had it 12 years. Cannot believe we have electric. The warning should be red on the met office .

A87 Skye Bridge is closed to all traffic. The A9 Dornoch Bridge is also closed to all traffic. Many others are restricted, including cars only on the Kessock Bridge at Inverness.

As for the ferries, well just don't go there.

Doc, I just posted on my facebook page, in over 6 years of collecting my own data this is the worst storm I have recorded. Things here should calm down slowly but as you say the risk continues for other more populated areas, especially your region.

Stay safe folks.
