I am trying to import model data by
ga-> sdfopen http://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/dods/gfs/gfs20131219/gfs_00z
e.c.t
using OpenGrads client but I keep getting the following error
Error: nc_open failed to open file "http://nomads....."
NetCDF: I/O failure
gradsdf: Couldn't injest SDF metadata.
I can't work out what is going wrong or how to solve this, please help

If you're running 2.0.a8 or later then use Grads. Earlier versions use gradsdap or gradsdods:
Always check the url in a browser before wasting your time as there have been quite a lot of network issues with Nomads in recent months.

Incidently, who knew that the GFS has a 1829m above sea level temp parameter!
Incidently does anyone know where the ECM server lives?
*rubs hands together with glee!
Here's one place:
http://www.ecmwf.int/
However, there's only a very limited set of variables freely available. I'm currently discussing licensing a more complete set for TWO but haven't yet made a decision on whether to go ahead. Not sure whether it's a worthwhile business proposition.
PS: When working on the Nomads you're effectively on a production system. If you're learning then it's much better to download a file and open locally rather than using DODS.
Oh thanks! Thats a good idea. It will save me having to type out such long names. So are you considering buying ECMWF data then? Does ECMWF sell its data to the public?
