I am trying to import model data by

ga-> sdfopen http://nomads.ncep.noaa.gov/dods/gfs/gfs20131219/gfs_00z

e.c.t

using OpenGrads client but I keep getting the following error

Error: nc_open failed to open file "http://nomads....."

NetCDF: I/O failure

gradsdf: Couldn't injest SDF metadata.

I can't work out what is going wrong or how to solve this, please help

If you're running 2.0.a8 or later then use Grads. Earlier versions use gradsdap or gradsdods

Always check the url in a browser before wasting your time as there have been quite a lot of network issues with Nomads in recent months.

Incidently, who knew that the GFS has a 1829m above sea level temp parameter!

Incidently does anyone know where the ECM server lives?

However, there's only a very limited set of variables freely available. I'm currently discussing licensing a more complete set for TWO but haven't yet made a decision on whether to go ahead. Not sure whether it's a worthwhile business proposition.

PS: When working on the Nomads you're effectively on a production system. If you're learning then it's much better to download a file and open locally rather than using DODS.
