Poor forecast again last night, that is two in just a few days now.

After sundays debacle when rain that was forecast the night before was just some light drizzle, last night's 10.35 forecast said showers through the night was actually rain all night!!

Not good

Trawling through Facebook, I see that the general public are now getting worked up over the wording "Polar Vortex" as the term has now become this year's "buzz word". I guess the media isn't helping by conjuring up mental images of ultra cold air being sucked into a black hole over the North Pole.

Tell me about it, its so irratating when people screw up on this sort of thing. Everyone here has been going on about the polar vortex since the beginning of time in 2001; suddenly everyone thinks its a hurricane of death.

We had a similar scenario (with less extreme temperatures if course) in December 2010.

Mind you, as Gav says, we were affected by it back in Dec 2010

Paul Hudson @Hudsonweather

Growing risk of 1st cold snap of winter next week. Battle between cold air in east & Atlantic air. Much uncertainty & very finely balanced.

UK Outlook for Sunday 12 Jan 2014 to Tuesday 21 Jan 2014:

Although showers and longer spells of rain will continue to affect the UK, conditions are not expected to be as stormy as of late. At first, the strongest winds and heaviest rain are most likely in the west of the UK, whilst the south and east will hang on to the driest weather. Temperatures are likely to be colder than recently in most areas with an increasing risk of frost, ice and fog. Thereafter, more changeable conditions are likely in the north and west of the UK with the best of the drier weather in the south and east. It will be rather cold in the north with an increasing risk of snow, mainly over hills, with nearer normal temperatures further south.
