Medlock Vale Weather
Thursday, February 6, 2014 11:23:18 PM

Interesting weather here at the minute - sleet and wet snow flakes coming down, temp steadily dropping. Currently bang on 2.0C. So that makes it 4 days so far of falling snow here this Winter but no settling snow so far. Just looked at the webcam for the M62 summit @about 400m asl and the grass is white.

Some amazing stats from the Met Office here

http://metofficenews.wordpress.com/2014/02/06/uks-exceptional-weather-in-context/

In southeast and central southern England, Dec 2013 and Jan 2014 was the wettest any 2 month period in a series going back to 1910. In this region it is probably the most exceptional period of winter rainfall in at least 248 years.

From 12 Dec to 31 Jan parts of southern England saw 5 months worth of rainfall.

The winter of 1875/76:

1875-76: Amazingly snowy winter for the UK, especially the South East early on, the first week of December dumped 1-2ft in some places, worst in the South East. March of this month had many snowstorms, and April recorded nearly 2ft of snow in the Midlands! Snowfall was  recorded (on a notable scale), in November, December, January, February, March, April, and May! I would regard this winter as very snowy

Similiar to last winter i see lol.

The winter following 76/77 was obviously non descript as nothing has been mentioned.

Okay so the winter or 1878/ 79

1878-79: Another snowy one! In the north, snow cover remained for 3 months! Snow  recorded in November, December, January, February, March and April! Very snowy

okay so not exact but similar in ways, i wonder if history could be repeating itself lol.

Lashing down in Basingstoke and has been for some time.

This event has done exactly what was expected to those areas that don't need it down here.

I find it frustrating that people call events downgrades and non-events well before these things come to an end

In the dry slot here. Seems a bit strange looking at the radar to see others getting pasted not far from here

Soaring past the record levels... I think that's the one through the Canal section in the heart of Salisbury - must be quite the sight!

http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/floods/riverlevels/Controls/RiverLevels/ChartImage.jpg?Id=1319&ChartType=Graph

Downstream, in Ringwood - and the other side of my home location - there is also a record event taking place.

Yet bizzarely, my local river station has reported no change in river height at all over the past 48 hours... apart from a sudden drop of 2-3cm around noon yesterday. I wonder if some kind of flood defence was activated... makes no sense though as there was no evidence of such a thing back in early January!

I have noticed, though, that some areas north of Salisbury reported less than 20mm for yesterday, which looks to be a result of the main masses of rain tracking NE through my home location and then on through places such as Reading (where I'm currently at), seemingly sparing places such as Andover from the worst of the rain.

Still, close to 20mm is a substantial event when you've had over 24mm across the preceeding two days... the River Avon behaviour near Fordingbridge remains a mystery then!
