Metoffice has just issued a yellow snow warning to parts of scotland

To be honest, the metoffice is largelly at odds with what I am seeing at the moment in the models, and I can only assume that is because the unified model isn't concering. Having said that, the metoffice maps are now more widely showing snow;  which I assume is based on one of their models. The text forecasts are the expert oppinions of met forecasters which as you say discard the risk of snow to all areas except the mountains of scotland. I don't know, I'm either not seeing data the met has, or I'm missing something in my intepretation.

GFS soundings now out, and they are perhaps the definition of marginal. Rain/snow borderline for basically everyone north of the midlands.

Hmmm, really upgrading the snow potential on the latest Beeb forecast indeed the potential of disruptive snow this week was in the headline!

Tuesday looks much more wintry from Northern England northwards with scope for someone to get what could be a mini blizzard on Thursday as another low zips across the midlands with cold air to the north.

Much to watch this week but as before it could still all amount to nothing.

As it probably represents my best chance of joining in with a 'snow' thread this winter, there was some sleety stuff in a shower here earlier today

I guess it could have been melted hail but I'm still going to claim it as a hint of sleetiness

I'll go back to the rain threads now

Apparantly parts of wales have seen quite a bit of snowfall? Tommorow's marginal situation should provide plenty of interest. If you don't get snow out of the front, don't be too dissapointed; heavy snow showers follow.

Ignore this post if you live in the south.

I'll do a snow risk map tonight aswell based on the 12Z suite.

Just had a thought, if we were to forecast a possible couple of inches of snow in about five days time, there'd be panic buying with supermarkets running dry within hours. Yet there are absolutely no problems with the food shopping during this current stormy type weather with gales and widespread flooding.

Something moving in from the Irish sea but the temp and dew point here still a bit marginal albeit dropping, 2.4C and 1.1C respectively. A degree or two lower would be better.

The moment MattyH has been looking forward too :S

Snow risk map for tommorow, based on ECMWF, GFS, WRF, EURO4 models. Variety of parameters used, including soundings. Probability is for 0:01 Tuesday to 23:59 Tuesday for snow to fall at some point during the day.

Models indicate an extremely high risk of snow for NW parts of N ireland, and Ireland in general. I think the front will contain a bit of snow on it for these parts too.

Note, the map is not intended to be a guide for the hills, this is useful for urban sites, or rural sites below about 200m. Cairngorns and higher parts of the pennines will have close to a 100% chance of seeing snow for instance rather than the 50:50 odds indicated.

Feel free to copy this map wherever, but please credit me :)

Few adendums:

For yorkshire, there is a higher probability of snow in central yorkshire than indicated here (concentric contours would be appropiate); the resolution is perhaps not high enough to show it; York for instance probably has closer to a 50% chance of seeing snow.

The probability of snow in wales dramatically shifts from north to south, there would be a dividing line perhaps half way down wales where the probability of snow massivly increases to the north of that.

Rubbish event here even this far north and modest altitude.

Temperature was actually quite low during the precipitation about 0.5c but it was mostly sleet and wet snow that left a slushy covering on car roofs.

Mind you I better not knock it as it could be the main snow event of the season!
