About an hour of heavy sleet and now light rain. I'm actually pretty amazed, ive seen sleet twice this week (on tuesday there was also sleet), and snow on monday. Sleet is rarer than snow, by the time you see snow flakes its basically wet snow; but two propper sessions of critical sleet which has to be at exactly the right temp to occur.

For instance today, no snowflakes were visible but the rain drops were distinctly icy and contained melted snowflakes on close examination on a coat; I would say that is proper sleet as opposed to very wet snow where flakes are visible.

It is irratating though, because about 15 minutes ago it was coming down pretty hard, and you could tell it was critical, if it had gone on for 5 more minutes it would have changed to snow.

A foul night out here indeed - heavy lying snow even here at low level in Banchory and as Michael mentioned a flash of lightning followed within a few seconds by a big crash of thunder. Quite a surprise but we had something similar on a SE-ly back before Christmas.

Still snowing here at 0.3' after starting as heavy rain at 4pm. Two long rumbles of thunder and it quickly turned to heavy snow. Very dramatic. Now about 12cms. Astonishing really considering elevation and previous weather. (It was 4.6' at 3.45pm.) an unexpectedly snowy Symon

Met Office catching up:

The deep area of low pressure will track northeastwards across southern Scotland and into the North Sea during Friday night, with cold air being pulled back south on its western flank. The intensity of the precipitation (thunderstorm near Aberdeen at 8 pm Friday), is allowing snow to penetrate to low levels, but this should be temporary with it reverting back to rain after midnight. Further areas of sleet and snow are likely above 300 metres during Saturday morning, with strong northerly winds leading to blizzards in the mountains.
