No idea on windspeeds here but it is getting seriously hairy out there, I can see fences down all over the place!

It's pretty wild out there considering we're a fair way from the "action". Pouring down and very windy.

Truly atrocious out there now. Worst gales here for years. Stuff crashing around everywhere. What's most impressive isn't just the gusts, it's the sheer constant windspeed. It's a constant never ending roar outside, interspersed with ferocious gusts. Awful, awful conditions.

This is a bad one. I think the morning will bring pictures of distruction across a wide area.

Only caught the end of this story but can someone please explain to me WTF a cruise ship (now trying to get to Tilbury) is doing out in the middle of the Channel where apparently it has been hit by a big wave and an 85 year old man has died?

Ian Fergusson, on Twitter, in Bradley Stoke, about a mile from Filton:

@fergieweather: This windstorm is nothing close to tragedies across W Country on 25-01-90, but is wildest I've seen here in 6yrs at @bbcpointswest weather.

Similar reports from here, in that the wind strength isn't the highest we've had this winter (so far), but tonight's noise from a much more sustained speed is quite incredible!

It's crazy out there, went out momentarily and it's pretty scary stuff, not seen anything like this for some years. A proper storm. Must be insane on the south coast and in southern counties. Stay safe everyone!

Winds are noticeably backing more westerly. That's worse for here and it's showing. We're facing right into the Bristol Channel. Really roaring here.

The swell is already impressive and the winds sustained around 60mph gusts around 75-80mph. One lamppost near south parade pier was swaying so badly i wouldn't be surprised if it topple before the night is over.

I've known and seen many a wind storm like this in Portsmouth, nothing to exceptional. I think though because of the amount of them in such quick succession of late, repares haven't been able to be done and more coastal and structures are likely to suffer as a result.

Complete horror show tonight. Easily the worst storm I've experienced since moving here in 1997. Expecting the damage across the south to be making the headlines tomorrow.
