roy will be pragmatic. its a tournament, not a cup final.  we need to get out of the group and then its knock out.  many will be dissapointed tonight (re the style of play and probably the line up) but need to see the bigger picture. pointless in screwing up the players in the heat and humidity when there are two games still to come (incidentally, the likely temps for thursday are 14/17 c and damp and only warm for the third game). a victory would be a bonus but not at any cost. the italians have their next two games in the north in high humidity. roy will take a point and then bet we can 'outscore/outpoint' the italians against uruguay and costa rica. coming second in the group will not make much of a difference re the last 16.


lets hope that the country can appreciate the above and the knives dont come out after a 0-0 bore draw.

Completely and utterly disagree. The only thing about this squad that gives me the slightest ounce of interest is it's young, fearless and attack-minded. To try and play a safety first style of play would be walking into the same stupid trap as we have in the last couple of major tournaments. Playing attacking football doesn't have to be reckless and naive. Italy will play there usual slow, slow, quick style of football. They will keep it tight and if we do the same then it will be the most boring game if the World Cup. Go for the win, not the draw. Uruguay will be tough. A draw and then a defeat to them and we could be staring at a brick wall. A win tonight is essential in my opinion.

Well we aren't going to win it so why not try and go out in a blaze of glory. Would be nice come the end to be able to say we lost but, buy God we played damn well.


Edit: I mean the tournament not just today's match.

Italy are the ideal side for England's first game. Why? Because Italy are slow starters in these tournaments which gives their early opposition a good chance. It would also be a boost for England's confidence to beat a team like Italy in their first game rather than be drawn against a minnow! The stage is set for Stevie G. and the lads. Sitting tight and effectively seeing out a draw is a dangerous and alien tactic. Woy has the squad playing a lot of possession football now with plenty of short passing. It doesn't have to be raking wing play and bursts through the centre.
