Defeat and they might as well go home tomorrow. U R Gay will be a bigger test than Italy.

roy will be pragmatic. its a tournament, not a cup final.  we need to get out of the group and then its knock out.  many will be dissapointed tonight (re the style of play and probably the line up) but need to see the bigger picture. pointless in screwing up the players in the heat and humidity when there are two games still to come (incidentally, the likely temps for thursday are 14/17 c and damp and only warm for the third game). a victory would be a bonus but not at any cost. the italians have their next two games in the north in high humidity. roy will take a point and then bet we can 'outscore/outpoint' the italians against uruguay and costa rica. coming second in the group will not make much of a difference re the last 16.

lets hope that the country can appreciate the above and the knives dont come out after a 0-0 bore draw.

More importantly, any team playing Lugano in defence can be got at. Lugano can't even get into the West Brom team F.F.S.

He's as slow as a cart horse and makes Michael Dawson look like a white version of Usain Bolt.

Stevie G. in the press this morning looking and sounding as though he's proud to be representing his country.  Too many England players IMO in recent years have given the impression they're doing the nation a favour and can't wait to return to their league club.

Completely and utterly disagree. The only thing about this squad that gives me the slightest ounce of interest is it's young, fearless and attack-minded. To try and play a safety first style of play would be walking into the same stupid trap as we have in the last couple of major tournaments. Playing attacking football doesn't have to be reckless and naive. Italy will play there usual slow, slow, quick style of football. They will keep it tight and if we do the same then it will be the most boring game if the World Cup. Go for the win, not the draw. Uruguay will be tough. A draw and then a defeat to them and we could be staring at a brick wall. A win tonight is essential in my opinion.

Well we aren't going to win it so why not try and go out in a blaze of glory. Would be nice come the end to be able to say we lost but, buy God we played damn well.

Edit: I mean the tournament not just today's match.

Why dont so many of you get it? (Well matty i guess)! Go for it this evening and you may well get a victory but then have nothing left for the remainder of the tournement. If you are so desperate to beat italy then fine. I' m rather hoping we get a quarter final place which could go either way. a bore draw tonight will be fine by me as we can let loose on uruguay and costa rica when conditions will suit us. its not a sprint.

I would much rather be going into the last group game possibly needing no result and able to rest a couple of key players at a stage of the tournament where potential future opposition are still playing flat out for qualification.

You may be happy to just trip along and just about qualify needing a result, probably a win from the last game, but if rather see this side, which plays naturally attacking-wise, play it's natural game, not stifled by cautious, negative tactics.

They even felt confident enough to indulge in some retail therapy yesterday I think I read. How splendidly English! Godspeed!

It doesn't have to be raking wing play and bursts through the centre.
