Gets 1 mark out of 10 from me thanks to being able to spend Sunday afternoon out in the garden in a deckchair reading the paper. Very pleasant indeed in the warm sunshine.

This never was going to be a decent wintry spell away from high ground in the north, so it's hard to score it meaningfully.

The only really remarkably feature of it has been the exasperating amount of hype that has been associated with it.

Depends what the 1-10 scale we are using means, for example what exactly is a 10/10?

I will plump for 4/10.

Saw nothing last year and I live in a horribly exposed area at sea levels on the west coast of Scotland.

During this spell it has been snowing on several occasions, one fall about 1-2 inches then a small dusting to top it up and then 6 hours of snizzle to add half an inch yesterday. It has been around freezing or below most of the time and the smow has survived for days.

3 out of 10, given the Synoptics I should have been in the sweet spot but snow went north and south of me and never exceeded 2cms.

We had two great winters in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 and have been paying for them ever since.

Have we had a cold spell? Must have slept through it. On that basis it has to be a big fat zero. This was complete crap and sensationalist nonsense even from rounded BBC weather forecasters was just unbelievable.

Am I the only one who thinks we have only had 1 bad winter in 5 prior to this one???

IMBY we had 4 winters on the bounce with good snowfalls causing problems

But from the point of view of a weather enthusiast the only event of note this time around has been the extreme warmth of the cold spell.

I'd give it 2 out of 10....not a single snowflake in Chichester as far as I am aware but we have had several decent frosts...especially last Saturday....a whole lot better than last Winter...I am not aware of any hype from the BBC about this cold spell...there has been some snow around in Midlands northwards....most of the hype has been on certain weather forums!...not to see a single snowflake in chichester in winter is not that unusual.... We were just spoilt in 2011/2012!

To put this current spell into context - mid December 2011 I woke up to full snow cover on the ground here one morning and then that lasted 24 hours with no melting, wasn't a lot probably a couple of inches max but more than can be said for this recent spell. Then we had a good 4 inches in early Feb.

Who forecast -15c?  Or, indeed, said it would be the coldest spell in four years?

Anyway, it was the coldest (at night) here for nearly 3 years and the snowiest it has been for nearly 2 years   Although that says rather more about the last 2 winters than this week

I would say about 3/10 - 4/10

Ive had frost, ive seen snow, ive seen snow stick )and hang around for a few days - albeit a dusting, but looked nice) and its been pretty cold during the day (today especially raw in the dampness)

IMBY we dont usually get that much snow, so my take on cold spell usually goes on how much enjoyment i get from photos from other people in their BY's posted on here and other forums. Last year although we didnt really get a winter, seeing what scotlands mountains got was a little relief. I also saw snow on some mountains in the Lakes (fairfield horseshoe - 1-2feet off snow and white out conditions) on a trip there last Feb.

Seeing the photos from Sheffied was really interesting, and bumped up the cold spell a notch or two.

Like ive said before - 2013 was historic for winter and in some ways was better than 2009 and 2010, as it went on so long with lots of varieties of snowfalls in some unusual places. Blizzards were common in areas that snowfall is usually rare. During that year IMBY we got no more than say 5-6 cms in any fall, but mostly was dustings, whereas in other places people got pastings.

I think there is a delusion on here that if you dont get a 6" snowfall in a winter - its a poor winter. Snowfalls of that size are very rare, and usually are a 1 in 10 yr event for most of us. Where they do occur they are usually in a hillier range - or next to one. Sheffield today highlights this point.

If you live in the south - these odds are reduced even further - but then you get better summers, so theres the trade off.

Pretty trivial (again unless you live in Sheffield!) but I will remember this cold spell as one of the only times I have seen snow showers to see level on a southwesterly wind.

Very rare that, and will be brought up again in future discussions i reckon.  Did anyone save the radar data?  Would make an interesting case study that as to the conditions that assisted it.

Well, I thought I would start this thread early seeing the cold and snow is more or less over from tonight, expect for Yorkshire. How would you rate this so called "coldest spell since 2013!?" and the -15c as forecasted.

Originally Posted by: tallyho_83

Let's see:

  • -4.7C recorded here, which is a typical overall winter low temperature here.

  • Three days of falling snow, of which one had "proper" snow for a time rather than just sleet

  • A brief dusting at work in Sittingbourne

  • Snow from a westerly flow - rare as hen's teeth here

And nationally:

  • Several places with more than a dusting in Kent and of course some places "up north" there was much more

  • Low temperature of -13C or -14C over Scotland

Accepting that ice days and a proper snow cover are rare events here, I'd rate this a 5/10. I was hoping for a cold spell before it started, perhaps with a little snow and that's exactly what I got. No complaints here, it certainly feels like winter!

This cold snap brought the longest, most horrible spells of cold rain here. No snow, not really any sleetiness. Just pure cold rain at +1/2c most of the time it was falling.

The only thing that it had going for it was the one or two hard frosts we had. Managed a low of -5.2c which is pretty impressive for inside the M-25, and without snow cover. And as a result, these were coupled with nice blue-sky crisp days.

However, since this is just standard winter weather really, and was much better in late December due to the absence of the cold rain, I'm going to give this cold snap a generous 1/10

The best since 2012/13, but then it didn't have much competition from last year, so overall 2/10. Plenty of falling snow, but not cold enough for any sustained accumulation.

Depends on your perspective really. Had this spell occurred in '09/'10, I'd have said "what cold spell" and called it a milder interlude. However, given last year's dross and considering that at the beginning of January we thought that we might be in for a repeat of last year, so to be honest I was glad to get a week or more of seasonal weather.

Given my location, we're unlikely to see much in the way of snow from the West/North-West. We had a couple of very light snow flurries, not enough to give a covering. A few air-frosts, down to -4.1 at best. Not much, but better than nothing. 3/10.
