Only an inch or so more than Sheffield had over boxing day!

Still impressive but fairly poor by NYC standards especially for the so called "Historic Blizzard" that was forecasted:

GFS going for another East coast snowfall early next week. Doesn't look so disruptive or complicated currently, but I bet they're keeping a close watch on its track all the same! Would be pretty funny if this one does bring NYC to a standstill. Then it's back into the deep freeze for the first week of Feb.

Southern Ontario has managed to miss the big storms so far this winter, but not the cold. Currently -15c in Toronto and -23c Ottawa. The storm early next week will track too far south for the Golden Horseshoe, biggest impact will be on the Ohio Valley and yes indeed, NYC may see a decent shot of snow too. I'm sure Stewart will be looking for one big dig yourself out type storm before the end of winter!

After a relatively mild spell it's back to the freezer for the Canadian Prairies, highs in Winnipeg in the -20s this weekend.

I take it back, storm track now modelled further north and the impact will be felt in southern Ontario. Indeed Hamilton is now under a winter storm warning with 20cm of snow possible by tomorrow. Hopefully Stewart will report in later. Could well be some enhancement off Lake Ontario.

Good Morning folks, indeed Graeme this one has sprung up from no-where really to threaten the big snow event we've been looking for here all winter as the warning issued indicates :

4:50 AM EST Sunday 01 February 2015
Winter storm warning in effect for:

  • City of Hamilton

Hazardous winter conditions are expected.

A developing winter storm from Colorado is tracking towards Southern Ontario. Snow associated with this storm will begin this morning and continue until Monday morning. Total snowfall amounts are generally expected to be in the 15 to 25 cm range, although amounts approaching 30 cm may be possible, especially near the Great Lakes. Also, winds will strengthen and become gusty this afternoon and evening, reducing visibilities to 0.5 km or less in blowing snow. The combination of snow and blowing snow will make for hazardous travelling conditions.

http://www.getprepared.gc.ca/

Winter Storm Warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required, so stay tuned to your local media or Weatheradio. Email reports of severe weather to [email protected] or tweet with the hashtag #ONStorm.

The period between 2pm and 9pm tonight when the wind could set up just right off the lake onto the shore of Ontario is the one to really look out for. Any lake enhancement with this coupled with the already expected general 6-9" of snow from the storm could mean a snowday for many tomorrow and a nightmare commute for others!

It's cold though, classic Southern Ontario winter weather, no marginal stuff with this one it'll be all snow. Temps all week well down forecast between -5c and -10c, proper winter in the GTA.

Will check in later if i get the chance.

My second cousin in Sarnia, Canada (near the Michigan border) posted this photo of his front yard today:

He says this is a drift, but they've had about 40cm level snow.

We were visiting them in Sarnia in August. Obviously the weather was quite different then! Would have been nice to be there at this time, but we would probably have never made it.

Hi folks, what a storm that was, one which last Friday wasn't modeled ended up being the biggest snowfall event here for some 3years. Here's the EC totals around the GTA :

A major winter storm originating from Colorado tracked south of the
Lower Great Lakes and brought widespread heavy snow and blowing snow
to Southern Ontario Sunday and Sunday night as forecast. Snowfall
amounts in the 25 to 40 cm range fell over Southwestern Ontario and
near Western Lake Ontario. Blizzard conditions were reported in the
Hamilton, Burlington and Northern Niagara regions as strong and
Gusty winds off Lake Ontario lowered visibilities to less than 200
metres.

The following is a summary of snow totals received by Environment
Canada as of 2 P.M. EDT today. In some cases, ranges are given as
snowfall amounts were difficult to measure due to the gusty winds
that accompanied the storm.

Location snow amount in centimetres

Windsor Airport 37
Blenheim 33
London Airport 21
Dorchester 25
Cambridge 18
Kitchener 20-30
Waterloo 20-30
Guelph 28
Fergus 25
Tillsonburg 31
Buttonville Airport 17
Mississauga 20-25
Brampton 20-25
Woodbridge 22
Toronto midtown 22
Thornhill 19
York university 19
East York 18
Grimsby 25
St Catharines 32
Hamilton mountain 25-40
Oakville 30

Please note that this summary may contain preliminary or unofficial
information and does not constitute a complete or final report.

As you can see Hamilton Mountain took a pounding! Here at home, where it's a snowday for me we had 42cm level, drifts upto andbeyond 2ft, an incredible sight. The good old western lake ontario snowmachine fired up big time, i don't keep the records anymorebut i reckon the 42cm is the 3rd highest snowfall here since i came to Dundas in 2006. Today it's -8c, bitter. Never experienced
true Blizzard conditions before, last night was a first one i won't forget.

A Selection of pics in and around Hamilton today showing the scale of the snow.

One note to point out, City of Hamilton still not cleared cat 3 roads (suburban) for those people who think Canadian's cope with
the snow, sometimes they don't do so well. Main roads like the QEW and 401 clear to a point, to get there you need a snowmobile!

Take Care

Great images. In my job, I deal with traffic incidents in Ontario, particulary the Toronto area and it is amazing how few roads are closed due to the snow. Infact there were more closures earlier in the year after that storm early Jan.

Good afternoon folks,

Here we go again for a Sunday snowday :

Special weather statement in effect for:

  • City of Hamilton

A mixed bag of snow, ice pellets, and freezing drizzle for Southern Ontario this weekend.

Disturbances tracking southeastward along a sharp Arctic front stalled over Extreme Southwestern Ontario will bring active winter weather this weekend.

Over the Golden Horseshoe, light snow is expected today becoming mixed with freezing drizzle tonight. More significant snow will develop over the Golden Horseshoe Sunday. For Southwestern Ontario, light snow in some areas today will become mixed with freezing drizzle or ice pellets tonight, then becoming snow Sunday. Over Central and Eastern Ontario, snow today, tonight, and Sunday.

Snow will end Sunday night over Southwestern Ontario, and early Monday over the Golden Horseshoe and Central Ontario. Snow will persist through Monday over Eastern Ontario.

Snowfall amounts are expected to generally remain below the warning criteria of 15 cm in 12 hours. The exception could be areas near Eastern Lake Ontario and in Niagara region, where snowfall warnings may be required for Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.

Poor driving conditions will accompany the precipitation.

Please refer to the public forecasts for further detail on precipitation timing and snowfall amounts.

This system or series of is still fairly un-organised and it will depend on timing and how it comes together whether we see lower snowfall totals due to mixing with freezing rain or ice pellets overnight.

Looks like another wintery Sunday regardless for the GTA and Golden Horseshoe and then there's late next week.  Bitter conditions expected to develop across Ontario, unusually cold for February TWN looking at -15, -20c by day

and upto -25c to -30c overnight.....Calgary temps here basically. We've had a few -20+ mornings but nothing of those levels by day, it could be brutal one to keep a watch on as the new week starts.

Have a great weekend everyone

A rather impressive cold shot for the eastern seaboard over this weekend if today's GFS 12z comes off.

The -15c 850hpa isotherm briefly sweeps down across southern Georgia on Sunday (for equivalent latitude think Nile delta!)

Extreme cold for huge swathes of the Great Lakes, Mid-west and Eastern seaboard for Saturday, with maxima of -14 to -16c in many parts of the Great Lakes.

This mirrors the warmth out west currently, with Calgary forecast to reach +12c on Thursday.

There have been no severe cold fronts heading into the Deep South. Chicago was behind on snowfall until that 20 inch dump last week, but now it is dry again, cold but not like last year. Boston is the one with the extreme snow this year, but even most parts of New York and the East Coast haven't seen big winter storms.

So although it seems severe, this year is quiet so far.
