We have family in Cape Cod....quite understandably they are sick of the snow...causing massive inconvenience and as far as they are concerned, it can't go quick enough! I've no doubt if I lived there I'd be thinking the same!

Incredible pictures, Micheal, thank you for sharing them! My family in Cape Cod haven't had as much as that... But bitterly cold, fearsome winds...and no fun at all...hence their being sick of the white stuff!

Great pics Michael. Amazing spell of weather for millions. -10c w/c of -20 today in Hamilton with light snow flurries. Down to -23c overnight and again tomorrow night, just stunning. For the first time in a long time Niagara Falls (American Falls) has completely frozen see below :

There's no maid of the mist on the Niagara river, some of the pics Reuters took from the American side make Canada or Ontario look like a frozen wasteland which is fairly accurate given the overhead temps!

Amazing incredible stuff, needless to say all of the GTA and Southern Ontario under an extreme cold alert. When it all melts, they'll be trouble

This must be the coldest for a long time there? - I remember whilst I was out in Toronto in Jan-March 2005 - There were a few days (21st -23rd Jan 2005), When the temperature never rose above -19c by day but it did warm up shortly after - but lately it seems like the winter is just going on an on and on etc. I spoke to someone who just returned from NY and apparently it never got above -5c for a week and one day it never got above -10c and was down to -16c by night.

Meanwhile - more snow on it's Way end of the week into weekend according to Brett Anderson:

http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-blogs/anderson/winter-not-even-close-to-done-yet-in-the-east/42502637

God knows how much flooding this will cause when all the ice and snow does melt - because seasons change much quicker over there and as we approach the latter stages of winter a thaw must be around the corner surely.

This cold blast is really going south this time. I think my post a few weeks back about how winter wasn't severe has took a turn as February has lived up to that. The cold front even makes it down to Cuba as temps in the day reach 17 or 18c, but by Saturday back to 30C. Same in Florida, it'll be back to near 30C at the weekend, even lows of 4C in Miami tonight.

Interesting weather for them, some staggering temps in Chicago today too, a HIGH of -16C and a low of -22C. I believe Kentucky will have even lower temps. Incredible.

Of course that goes hand in hand with the dross we now have here.

New Great Lakes ice cover maps are out from EC - total cover up 22% from this time last week to 78%. That's a very sizable leap! If there is a continuation of the cold weather pattern then last year's near record cover could be under threat. An increase in wind strength and a forecast less cold blip over the weekend may well slow down ice cover growth though, so it's difficult to tell at the moment.

Update on the cold, currently -17c out in drifting snow, w/c -25c at 3pm in Hamilton, absolutely brutal folks. You got to be here to experience how amazing this is. Down to -26c air temp tonight then -14c high for Friday before the system mentioned above rolls in, EC going for a broad range at minute from under 2 inches light snow if the storm tracks further South to it going right through the Lakeshore and dumping up and above 6 inches!

Post again tomorrow with an update

Yesterday marked the 35th consecutive ice day at Toronto Pearson, good enough for tied third among the longest sub zero stretches recorded. Both 1977 (51 days) and 1978 (41 days) look safe as the temperature at Pearson may well creep above 0c midweek. However with a forecast high of -5c today it will round off February as an entirely sub zero month - the same applies to many places in southern Ontario. Will need to see where February 2015 ranks at Pearson but I'm sure here, as for many other places around the Great Lakes and into the NE States it will be the coldest, or one of the coldest, Februaries on record.
