Ontario Snowman
26 January 2015 20:29:21

Hi folks, first up i have seen 2ft of snow here, it's an incredible experience! Does look very special for parts of NY and New England, one for the books for sure.

Here in the GTA we have an unexpected visitor thanks to the U.S. Nor'easter in the form of a lake-effect snowsquall which has set up station just in the prime position for Hamilton and Dundas as the EC warning below details nicely,

Warnings

9:29 AM EST Monday 26 January 2015
Snow squall warning in effect for:

  • City of Hamilton

A snow squall off of Lake Ontario continues to affect regions around the western end of the lake today.

The most intense portion of the snow band is currently affecting the southern parts of Burlington, Dundas and the northern parts of Hamilton. The band is expected to slowly shift southward toward Stoney Creek this afternoon, then possibly further south toward the Niagara region by this evening..

Some areas will see in excess of 15 cm of snowfall. Gusty winds will also result in blowing snow and reduced visibilities. Driving conditions will be hazardous under the snow squall.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. There may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.

Snow Squall Warnings are issued when bands of snow form that produce intense accumulating snow or near zero visibilities.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required, so stay tuned to your local media or Weatheradio. Email reports of severe weather to [email protected] or tweet with the hashtag #ONStorm.

The Linc which connects Hamilton to the world  snowbound earlier!

Snow depths around 15-20cm across the city in favoured spots.

Looking out the office window probably about 10-15cm in Upper James, the misses tells me it's closer to 20cm back in Dundas, incidentally so rare to see a specific warning from EC for local sub-divisions of Hamilton, something i applaud!

Cold currently at -8c, cold week ahead more snow chances on Thursday. Who needs 2ft eh?

Gonna be interesting to see this unfold, though I can't help see some of the news sources hyping things up with #Blizzard2015. Not sure on the widespread power outages they tout, I imagine it'll be an issue but not as severe as Sandy.

On another note in my job, which involves putting on traffic incidents and road closures in New York (as well as other cities), its going to be a busy night for me.

I would imagine if one lived in New York City then a storm even of this magnitude wouldn't be too much of a hassle, sure at worst the power may go off for a bit ...... but most essentials are within walking distance, the snow would soon get trampled down by all the people.... and New York is as far south as Spain so the solar output over the next day or 2 would melt quite a bit of it. It's people who live just outside the Manhattan area that will suffer the most - like the suburbs.

I mean we'd love 6 inches but its nothing drastic there.

Looking at the latest alert for where I used to live; 10 miles out in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, there is a rapid fall off in projected storm totals.

Philadelphia east and north east is forecast to get 10-18", while where I used to live 6-10" is forecast. Interestingly, Media - five miles SE from where I lived - is in the 10-18" band.

LOL, latest FFS goes for 3-6" in NYC. ECM sticking to 12-18".

Someone is going to get caught with their pants down.

FWIW, I think FFS have finally lost the plot.

I suspect that the totals won't be as great as previously modelled, but the ppn is certainly starting to gather off the coast.

Been checking out the webcams on I95, runs NYC to Boston. Not a single car on the roads, just piles of snow and surprisingly doesnt look ploughed either  This is unheard of ? Like shutting the M1 down

I was expecting Times Square to look worse this morning after watching it starting to snow there yesterday afternoon....I guess they just clear and plough all through the night though?

I don't see it as a weather let down more than media hype, and forecasters should know better but too often jump on the bandwagon.

Well I saw the NYC Times Square webcam - looks like they have had a good dump of snow but certainly doesn't look like the historic 2-3 ft of snow as forecasted!??

Meanwhile the snow has tapered off" as they say in USA:

The expected totals have been revised down. Parts of upstate New York could see as much as 20" of snow. Parts of MS could see as much as 2ft

The Sweet spot looks to have been through eastern Connecticut and mid Mass. (through Worcester).

Certainly looks like a winter wonderland in Boston. And it could yet be a big storm too.

Biggest totals so far in MA are 18" in Sandwich and Oxford.

Certainly a damn sight more than Sandwich and Oxford here.
