It has been a little below average temperature wise in NY state this winter and around average in many other areas of the eastern seaboard. Parts of western Canada/the prairie provinces have been a bit milder than average. Extreme though? Not by their standards.

It has been pretty snowy in a few places in NE N America though. My brother in PEI has the best part of 5 feet of snow currently - 2 feet of it fell in one day last week (lucky guy!)

If that happened in London they'd be eating each other within a week.

In 2010 they had farm contractors clear snow with big farm trailers from the next village here - which is always lined with cars and was getting impossible as ploughed snow got deeper and deeper.
The logistics of doing that in many UK streets with nowhere to put piles of snow doesn't bear thinking about!

Just reading the AccuWeather blog - there is on average s snowstorm of 6" or more every 3 days - next one is this weekend:

There is Wednesday night into Thursday snowfall and then, Thursday night - Fri. Then Saturday night into Sunday 'Worst of the storm!' - As forecasted here:

Well at least they have Friday night to look forward to without seeing a snowstorm - hope they don't get withdrawal symptoms! One night without a snowstorm haha.

I just hope that when we next get a colder snap - most likely last week of February, I really hope we do not complain about a couple inches of snow, because this would be pathetic.

Certainly some very big (and badly timed) contrasts coming up. The Canada winter games are opening in Prince George BC this Friday with a forecast high of +7c, while Toronto will struggle to get above -20c on Sunday

Maybe I spoke too soon about a mild winter for the deep south. A huge pool of Arctic air will spread south across the US next week. Highs in Houston are forecast at 37f or nearly 3 degrees. Lets remember this last two weeks they have had highs of 82 or below. T shirts to big coat weather!

I didn't think Great Lakes ice cover would be much of a story this year, but its  growth over the next week or two will certainly prove interesting! Last year saw a smidge over 92% coverage in the first week of March - which was the second highest value since records started in the 70's. According to Environment Canada coverage as of yesterday was approx. 55%, which is quite a lot lower than this time last year (though still over 20% above average). I think by the time of next Thursday's report this could have really shot up, due to 2 major cold plunges and a third in progress. I doubt coverage will reach levels seen last year, but it's a good indicator of a continued theme from last year weather-wise.

Interestingly Lake Ontario, which usually sees the least amount of freezing due to its depth, appears to be getting more cover forming this year than last.

Quick post to highlight Toronto Pearson recorded its lowest temperature since 1994 on Sunday (-25.5c). Meanwhile the Maritimes blizzard dumped another 64cm of snow on Charlottetown PEI. Brutal spell of weather.

Hi folks,

Some pics from the incredible snow in PEI -

Incredible snows in Atlantic Canada. Saw a report of 132cm in Moncton, NB just staggering stuff. I know a bigger city in Boston, MA has been buried too but this really is a rare and back to the old days spell of Canadian weather.

Here, bone-chilling cold by night and day over the past 4 days. As you can see above, record setting temps across Southern Ontario for the date, was -27.5c here in Dundas last night, -26c the night before. The coldest sustained period i've seen in my time here, as Graeme said, brutal.

If you don't have a heated garage or a place to store equipment, they'll never work in these temps. That recording at YHM this morning was the 4th coldest night in recorded history for Hamilton and the 2nd coldest behind a -30c recorded in 1984 at Hamilton Munro. The previous weather station in Hamilton was down the mountain supposedly in a warmer location and records go back to 1888!

Currently -16c in slate grey skies, Yellowknife weather not the GTA. All week expected to remain well below 0c with only slight moderation. February wanted to make a story, it sure has.

Take Care

Amazing photos there!
A friend of mine lives in Boston and he says it's epic even by their standards. Good job we have nothing along those line here!
