While over in California, the drought (worst in recent history if not on record) continues unabated with thefts of water now subject to dramatically increased fines

And Anchorage, in Alaska, has for the first time since records began, not recorded a winter temperature  below 0F

Yesterday marked the 35th consecutive ice day at Toronto Pearson, good enough for tied third among the longest sub zero stretches recorded. Both 1977 (51 days) and 1978 (41 days) look safe as the temperature at Pearson may well creep above 0c midweek. However with a forecast high of -5c today it will round off February as an entirely sub zero month - the same applies to many places in southern Ontario. Will need to see where February 2015 ranks at Pearson but I'm sure here, as for many other places around the Great Lakes and into the NE States it will be the coldest, or one of the coldest, Februaries on record.

Confirmation that with a mean temp of -12.6c, this February was the coldest on record at Toronto Pearson and the coldest in Toronto in general since 1934: http://www.theweathernetwork.com/news/articles/was-this-past-february-the-coldest-on-record-in-toronto/46381/

Looks like the North East and Midwest will start to thaw out next week. Weekend temps in the 40s in Chicago and up to 50 by Tuesday. Its been a very cold second half of winter so it'll feel balmy for them!

Boston isn't doing well either (-11c at 8am) and a forecasted high of -4c today:

And amazingly in Chrlottetown PEI the snow storms are still coming on a regular basis with a cumulative snowfall this winter of over 15 feet so far. Remarkable even by their standards (and my brother has the "pleasure" of experiencing it all!)

I have the Weather Network live on the TV at the moment. Nova Scotia (and the rest of the Maritimes, I may hasten to add) set to get hammered Wednesday as a deepening low is expected to dump up to 30cm of snow (and very strong winds), with slightly lower forecast amounts towards Sydney.

Charlottetown, as the Doc said earlier, is heading towards 500 cm this winter season.

EDIT: I should add that Newfoundland got dumped on today with up to 50cm in places.

Years ago my father travelled to Stephenville once a month. One morning he woke up and saw snow outside his window. Which is fine and dandy - except he was staying on the first floor.

Certainly was an interesting day on Monday for temps, even in Chicago reaching 22C. Just a fortnight day highs were well below 0. Back to the cooler weather today with a 35F temp drop. Such a great diversity as mentioned. Be interesting to see how the tornado season pans out.

Well, meanwhile Calgary hit 22c today - quite remarkable for March. I remember it being +18c in March 2005 then fell down to -21c a few days later.

I was watching this live from one of the chasers over on TVN Weather. To watch it live was incredible. Obviously the damage is horrific but to see it in realtime from the chasers was crazy. Especially with the social media element as well. I've been watching streams for a few weeks and seen some good storms on them and a funnel cloud, but this was the first tornado I'd seen in realtime (albiet on video).

Crikey, it's been a while since the last post!

Summer-like warmth has moved into southern Ontario and Quebec. Ottawa reached 30.7c yesterday and Toronto is forecast to hit 29c today.

Hamilton reached 30.2c yesterday so I hope Stewart is enjoying the early taste of summer.

I'll be hoping for similar conditions when I'm over there next month!

How come no posts for 5 months??

Looking like another poor ski season for the Rockies again:

Friends of mine when skiing in Whistler , BC last December and it snowed once in 2 weeks - but even that never lasted at resort.

http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-blogs/anderson/weekly-long-range-update-12/53146483

Looks like this pattern is bang on and will continue throughout the winter. - This monthly update ties in well with the LRF's even watching Gav's videos - I.E the trend for a colder and wetter southern SE USA and a milder than average Northern USA/ Canada.
