One of the best moments of the night was watching the Welsh Windbag criticising the electorate for being unable to make the right decision! He pretty much said we are duplicitous and can't be trusted.

An amazing election result, and completely unexpected given that all the polls before the exit poll had been showing the conservatives and labour neck and neck.

We`ll be buying a bottle of champagne later to celebrate.

Yes, the decimation of the Lib Dems in the SW in particular is amazing. There were a few Labour gains from the Lib Dems, but mostly the Conservatives mopped up the anti Lib Dem sentiment. An abject lesson in how to ruin an opposition party - go into coalition with them as the junior partner.

Exactly, not to mention the boundary changes that the Tories will now apply making it even harder for Labour to win in 2020. A pure Tory government will also entrench the SNP dominance in Scotland, so the centre left will again be split three-ways.

Only a great leader could save Labour but there doesn't seem to be any, in fact most of the candidates look even worse than Red Ed.

Even though I am a lib dem supporter and also I can see the constitutional risks that this country is now facing, somehow I feel optimistic today. The Tories could be quite good with the economy (they will have no excuses now), plus the country will finally get to have a say on the EU membership which should settle the matter for our generation.

 

 

 

That is unfortunate. The LDs did the right thing in 2010, they were solid in Government and now they have been severely punished for their toruble.

It makes it incredibly unlikely that any minor party would want to join one of the bigger parties in Government in the future.

Recall all the speculation about the SNP getting into bed with Labour (which Miliband ruled out)? In the hypothetical situation hwere the SNP had gone into coalition with Labour, it would no doubt have destroyed them in the same way.

Labour lost this when Ed gave the answer "NO" to a well known question on the Question Time programme.

As I have said all along, online polls are rubbish for this sort of thing, I won't go into all the details of why, but when the exit poll came out (interviewed by people to people) I knew then how this was going.

I said this a few weeks ago, but the only way is to separate Scottish Labour from Labour and make Scottish politics similar to NI. Any future Labour govt would then effectively be a coalition between two putatively different parties.

One of the many joys this morning is seeing the silly celebs confounded by the result.

All those silly, Labour supporting celebrities have got their answer - the British people have more common sense in their little fingers, than all the silly celebrities put together!

I think this result for Labour is as bad as 1983 for them.My reasoning is how many senior  Labour MPs that have gone. 

In 1992, Labour gained seats and the shock was not winning. This election they lost MPs and senior ones at that, Alexander, Murphy, Curran, Balls.

A body blow.

I think you're wrong. The result is worse for them than 1983. The Scottish situation and the unpredicted Tory success is a hammer blow for Labour. In much of the UK they are now nothing more than a pressure group. A poor one at that!

Cameron with a Conservative only Government behind him, should be able to play hardball with the EU.

He needs some proper concessions to offer the voting public prior to the 2017 EU referendum which will now certainly take place.

That makes UKIP largely irrelevant now.

I agree, it is a catastrophic result for Labour. The party has no choice but to get back to a Blairite agenda with a leader who doesn't frighten Middle England or provoke ridicule in the media. I really don't know what they do about Scotland other than hope the SNP screws it up over the next few years but given their organisation and professionalism, I can't see the Nats letting this slip.

Edit: I can't help but admire the Scots and the SNP. They have played a blinder and really deserve to wield influence on the executive at Westminster, not just in the legislature. All those of us who hold the union dear, must hope that Cameron ignores the swivel-eyed fringe in his party and somehow works with the SNP to give Scotland a greater say in how our union is run.

Possibly. The others in the party simply don't have any gravitas. However, I think this will turn out to be a tough term for the Tories, so perceptions may change very quickly.
