Not taking anything away from the trauma that the folk in the NW are undergoing of course; I hope they maintain the resolve and community spirit that has helped them through this kind of grief before. Good luck to you all- our thoughts are with you.

Edit: a look at those amazing pictures suggest that the storm does merit a name (another thread I know)- folklore requires it! Otherwise we're saying these storms aren't as important as the Atlantic hurricanes and tropical storms- which (please correct me if I'm wrong) don't all cause damage to land.

Thanks. Books and valuables staying moved until we see what happens tomorrow night.  More rain expected, so could be in for round two

Incredible photos of the A951. We have driven along that road many times and to see it like that is amazing and very sad.

I think/hope that the next spell of rain may not be enough o cause a repeat of the last 36 hours.

Gavin, Cumbria did declare a major emergency yesterday. Let's hope that they get as much assistance and support as possible in the coming weeks and months.

Yes, thank you for that party political broadcast by the Green party.

The Mayor of Keswick Paul Titley tells BBC News water levels are the highest he's ever seen.

"The flood defences were designed for a one in 100 year event and since it's six years since we had the last one, we were sort of surprised that we got one so soon. I think they did work but they were just completely overwhelmed by just the sheer amount of rainwater we had. The river was 5.4 metres above ground this year. In 2009 it was 4.6 metres. And 4.6 metres had sat there as the target that we never wanted to breach again."

Pity the poor mayor.

I think the government and its agencies need to wake up and smell the coffee.  A changing climate brings changing extreme weather events.  Build those defences higher.  They need to be thinking 1 in 500 year event based on past data.

John Hammond confirmed lunchtime that the 24 hour rainfall record had been broken  not sure precise location but no doubt somewhere at the head of Borrowdale like Seathwaite

The Met Office says Storm Desmond has broken two rainfall records. As well as the 24-hour record, it's also expected to set a new bar for the amount of rain falling in 48 hours.

There were 405mm of rain recorded at Thirlmere in the 38 hours to 08:00 GMT on 6 December.The Met Office currently doesn't have the full 48-hour data but expects that the total could be sightly higher than 405mm.

The previous record was 395.6mm. which fell at Seathwaite, Cumbria, on November 18 and 19 2009.

The 24hr record now stands at 341.4mm, and maybe this was also at Thirlmere.

Had Honister not recorded such extraordinary rainfall, Thirlmere would have grabbed the 24 hour record: it had 322.6mm over the 24 hour period.

It's going to be quite a while before normality does resume to that part of the world.
