While it was infinitely superior to the rest of the winter, as a cold spell it was dreadful. Shockingly bad for January. Didn't get to -5C, only two nights as low as -2C, no ice days, only wet snow with no accumulation and it even rained at one point. Didn't even get any good sunsets or sunrises. Therefore can't give it any marks so 0/10.

2/10 in Worcestershire - no snow, but a couple of decent air frosts to kill some garden pests.

For snowfall compared to the last 5 winters it's a 10, for cold frosty weather it's a 1 with only one frosts recorded IMBY. All in all I'll give it a 5 but that reflects how dire it's been for snow around these parts since December 2010.

4/10 for me

At one stage, on the eve of the forecasted colder spell, it looked like we could be in for 7-10 days of winter, but it didn’t turn out like that.

We only got 2 air frosts – and one of those nights the temp began to rise soon after midnight and was above zero by dawn.

The saving grace was the snow – but even that was a frustration. After being forecast to be within the ideal area, the snowier zone got shunted eastwards. The result was that, although snow was falling for much of Saturday and the temp hovered around 0.2c to 0.5c, we only got a thin, slushy covering as every time the snow rate increased, it’d quickly die back or even turn to sleet. It was only from around 6pm onwards, when the bulk of the front had moved southwards, did colder air wrap around the PPN band & proper snow began to fall. We ended with about 2cm on all surfaces – enough to build a couple of modest snowmen & get the sledges out for. Unfortunately, a slow thaw set in mid-morning & by nightfall Sunday, most of the snow had melted.

Still, snow is snow.

With lows of -1.7, -3.8 and -1.5 plus around 2cm of snow (that`s being generous, I didn`t go out to measure it) it was pretty poor as cold spells go. The snow only lasted half a day as well.

So I`ll give it 3/10.

A couple of nice frosts and half an hours snowfall...not really an Arctic Blast but way better than Swly winds and rain...3/10...

1 out of 10 is all it was worth, without the decent frost a couple of nights ago it would've been zero.

3.5 / 10 - an inch of snow overnight sat and a few decent frosts but never felt truly cold to me. Even by todays standards it was below average.

Not a proper cold spell at all, just a bog standard chilly period we'd expect a few times in an average winter.

Still pleased we had some colder weather hoping that a few bugs were killed and anything else cold weather is supposed to do in the long run.
No snow and no real impact here and one morning when I noticed the rooves were a bit white, so can only give it a 1/10 for here.

Barely registered here.  Best that can be said was it was a  period  when the outrageously mild  regime briefly  lost its grip.

No snow and a  frost or 2 -

1/10.

Have I missed something ?

Oh you mean the odd frost we had and leaden grey skies for most of the time.
A little overnight snow that melted quickly: 1/10

Although it was a bit of a whimper, I have 3 positives to take from it:

- Most of this week has been cold. sunny and frosty which was great.
- An impressive minimum of -7.9C
- A tiny bit of snow. It quickly melted, but nice to see it falling from a nor'wester and the first time it settled (well, sort of) in nearly 3 years.

3/10 for me.

Obviously the models are looking sh.ite tonight because a thread about a non-existent cold spell down here keeps getting bumped.

EDIT: And now Mike is posting in the model thread, so I know it's sh.ite for the forseeable without even having to have a look.

If I was still in Pompey, this 'cold' spell would have been a 0/10.

Sure, some upland parts (especially) had snow as well as some lower lying areas but my god.... day temps between 3c and 5c (on average) would hardly constitute a cold spell. In the late 70s, 80s and early 90s, cold would mean below freezing by day. Average would be 5-7c and mild would be 8-11c. Nowadays, the mild spells often reach the teens. That just about sums it up.

If I was rating the cold spell versus recent cold spells and more historic ones it'd barely rate - maybe a 1 or 2 out of 10 if I was being generous.

If I was rating it in the context of this winter and what's gone before I'd probably go as far as 5/10 purely because of the contrast from the record breaking warmth and dull rubbish of December. A week or more of chilly/cold days with plenty of crisp sunshine, overnight frosts and some settling snow seems pretty remarkable following on so closely from that

1/10 and that was given to the passing interest of observing an overnight low of -3.4c on one morning. Snow was never expected but the carrot was dangled last Saturday when it appeared that the trough may extend its influence this far east to give a dusting. As it turned out the dusting stopped 5 miles west of here. The rain shower at noon on Sunday just added to the grey let down.

My prized Aster that was purchased in 2012 and has survived each winter and has grown notably large was destroyed by the frost.

Temperatures in the peak of this cool blip still peaked at 4-6c..testament to the warm environment and depth temperatures still being fedback from that remarkable December. It could have got down to -5c or overnight here but stratocumulus drifting down at 3am on Tuesday and Wednesday morning prevented that from happening locally.

Very disappointing and ready for Spring now.

Could someone let me know where Gavin's thoughts are? Where is Matty?

I use to enjoy reading Gavin's thoughts on Saturday's even when the forecast is for days or weeks of wind and rain muck - he would make t interesting!?

Was the CET even below average last week?

For neatness I like the Department of Work and Pensions definition of a cold spell which triggers cold weather payments, that is.

'Average daily temperature at 0.0c or below for 7 consecutive days'

That seems a good yard stick to me and on that count this cold spell failed miserably, I think March 2013 was the last time this was reached in England.

3/10 not cold enough too short and no snow at all , so could be another snow less winter for me on the cards , but a couple of hard frosts to kill the bugs and no maximums under 5 deg c let alone a freeze day , but at least it was dry with more sunshine at times..
One thing is no one s gong to remember this winter for the cold , it will the the December warmth and the rain

Just for fun I did a quick frequency chart for all the scores so far, and the evidence screams a resounding 'rubbish' with regards this 'cold' spell.

Mean score = 2.9 so far with a St dev of 2.19.

I'll be generous and give it a 3.5.

It was nice to see some cold weather for a change, and it did snow (although not much), but it didn't last long and the canal near me didn't even freeze over (although that may be a reflection of the unseasonable warmth of this winter affecting the temperature of the water somewhat).

So 3.5/10
