FREEZING February: Britain on ALERT for SNOW and arctic gales as temperatures plunge

"STORM-lashed Britain is on alert for a major Arctic freeze with snow, freezing gales and blizzards forecast for the rest of month. Experts warned not to be lulled into a false sense of security by the current mild weather with February shaping up to be one of the coldest on record.

A dramatic change in air pressure over Britain will drag freezing winds in from the North Pole triggering snow and plummeting temperatures. Some long-range forecasters are warning the cold weather could hold out until APRIL with only the odd mild spell to break the misery."

No prizes for guessing who one of the experts is...

Will be interesting to see what the BBC Weather for the week ahead @ 21:55 has to offer? - Will they upgrade the chances of colder weather mid-month? (If any).

What has happened to Philip Eden? I only just realise he doesn't write the monthly assessment for Weather magazine anymore.

UK Outlook for Tuesday 9 Feb 2016 to Thursday 18 Feb 2016:

Changeable conditions are likely to prevail through the middle of February, with further spells of cloud and rain interspersed with colder, brighter, showery conditions, the showers wintry in the north. Rainfall totals are expected to be largest over western facing high ground. There will be a continuing risk of hail and thunder. It may be very windy with gales at times, possibly severe mainly in northern and western parts. Temperatures are expected to be mainly near normal. However, locally cold and frosty nights are still possible. It may become generally colder for a time later next week, especially in northern and central areas. There is only a very low probability of any more settled weather.

UK Outlook for Friday 19 Feb 2016 to Friday 4 Mar 2016:

The latest indications are that the latter half of February and the start of March will be dominated by changeable weather coming in from the Atlantic, with showers or longer spells of rain at times, mainly across northern in particular. Southern and eastern parts should have the best of any settled spells. Some snow is likely at times in the north and west and there are also likely to be some frosty nights, but despite this overall the temperature will probably be a bit milder than average for the time of year. Generally windy with gales or even severe gales in northern and western parts, with lighter winds at times in the south.

Is it me or is every chance of a drier spell is getting downgraded now? Forget the cold spell - it will NEVER happen! But now looks like there will only be one dry day next week!? WEDNESDAY! This will mean by tomorrow - this drier' day will be replaced by more wind and rain ETC!

Is it now fair to write this winter off as the worst ever in living memory!?

Yes ,. In terms of cloud and damp and mild this is the worst i can remember in 50 years. I have never known a spell from early November to now when i have been greeted by drizzle on so many days. There have been wetter periods here , but this has been relentless damp and with a high water table since a very wet August , any rain at all has soon made fields a bog

UK Outlook for Thursday 11 Feb 2016 to Saturday 20 Feb 2016:

Unsettled weather will continue across all parts of the country initially with further spells of cloud and rain interspersed by colder, brighter, showery conditions. Precipitation will occasionally fall as snow in northern and central areas, this mainly on hills, but perhaps also to lower levels at times. It will often be windy with gales or severe gales in places, perhaps most frequently across exposed southern parts. Temperatures are expected to be near average in the south, but slightly below normal in the north where there will be some overnight frosts. Turning drier briefly on Monday before unsettled weather quickly returns to all parts, the wettest and windiest weather this time across the north. More in the way of drier, settled weather may develop later in the week across southern areas.

UK Outlook for Sunday 21 Feb 2016 to Sunday 6 Mar 2016:

Indications are that the latter half of February will be dominated by changeable weather coming in from the Atlantic. This will bring showers or longer spells of rain to most parts, wettest in northern areas, while southern parts may benefit from some longer dry spells. Snow is likely at times, mainly over northern hills. Temperatures should generally be near normal for the time of year, however occasional frosty nights are possible at where skies become clear. Generally windy with gales or even severe gales at times, mainly in northern and western parts. By early March there is a possibility of more settled weather becoming established, mainly across southern areas, bringing drier and less windy conditions here, however, wet and windy weather will most likely persistent in the north and west.

You should certainly look up the group, exacta weather - the truth behind the headlines, on Facebook takes great joy in rubbishing all madden's "forecasts". Think Brian follows it too.
