Hi Neil, yes, odd, it is 70% rain and 30% sleet here and in heavier bursts much more sleety.

Also worth bearing in mind that the warning area doesn't necessarily reflect the snowfall risk, but where snow potentially could be 'hazardous'.

My local forecast still suggests sleet or snowfall is a good possibility but because it's arriving late to East Kent, the worst may likely fall more in daylight hours tomorrow and therefore less likely to settle.

Looking at the radar, the sleet area is growing every hour in the Yorkshire moors area. This should expand rapidly in the afternoon / evening.

Rain and sleet across parts of central, eastern and southern England will move slowly eastwads, and turn to snow in places, possibly even to lower levels. Clearer further northwest with some icy stretches, and showers in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

Thursday:

Rain and snow soon clearing eastern England. Elsewhere, sunshine and showers, with showers mainly across western areas and wintry over high ground in the north. Staying rather cold.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Turning wet and windy with heavy rain in places throughout. Staying cold in the north with hill snow but milder elsewhere. Rain clearing on Sunday with all areas turning colder.

Just thinking this: Since the surface wind is coming in from the south here at Kent and the dewpoints are well below freezing over France . . . perhaps, just perhaps it may do a 5th Feb '12 thing at this end? The rain turning into as snow over this south east corner as the rain band come up against the southerly continental airflow tonight?

I've been caught out before by this, and it was a night time occurrence . . . could this be a last chance saloon surprise snow event for my end?

I wouldn't over-analyse Ian. If it does turn for a few hours it'll all be gone by mid-morning anyway.

However I do acknowledge your theory. Any model showing rain to snow has it as a rear flank undercut not a forward line drag in of lower dps. To be honest I'm past caring about this excuse of a winter now and want Spring to get a move on.

 I am clutching on straws so tightly my knuckles has gone white.

Given that the air temp of 5.2 C and 57% humidity giving me a dewpoint of -2.6 C at this end, it's feasible, but it depends what is coming down from aloft at this end and over the French side.

But I'm with you about wanting Spring to turn up as soon as possible. This morning was quite sunny and felt mild for it, I did appreciate that before it became all draughty and overcast in the afternoon.

For where? The far southwest or south coast even London looks to be around 5-6C tomorrow

Hi Ian.  I'm afraid that you need a SSE flow (ie east of south), to draw in the air you need.  S is not good enough as the crossing is too long.

The dew points are +ve by 1-3 degrees by the early hours.  The only chance you have is to head up to Farthing Corner around 6-7am for some back edge undercut sleet as the wind goes SSE briefly for an hour or so before a quick switch to a NWly.

A brief flurry here and it is now dry and overcast with an air temp of +2.1C. I anticipate some further wet snow overnight and, quite frankly, it can p*** off so that we can get on with spring.

I saw one slushy drop of sleet amidst all the rain in Grenoside earlier. I consider this a victory 

On/in another day/time/dimension it could of been a snow event for the east 

But sadly the reality is temperature of 2.8C and a dew point of 1C with steady rain falling 

Directly over London. And a 7C over Berkshire/Oxon region.
