As a long time winter MO thread lurker, I've personally found the forum more difficult to read this year. Not because the science has changed or because the winter has been so average (for my location at least) but because there often seemed to be an undercurrent of trolling from a few people.
In the past mischief-making is usually easily lost/ignored amongst the general goodwill of the forum but the decreased traffic at times this winter perhaps gave such behaviour more prominence than it deserves. With every forum online there will be the odd member who gets more from rubbing others up the wrong way than actually discussing the subject at hand and it's a shame when those who do contribute more constructively become frustrated enough to leave.
Gooner's JFF posts were exactly as he described and usually a tonic to a subject some take too seriously at times. I'd also contend the simple nature of his posts made a complicated science such as meteorology more accessible to the layperson like me. It's a shame he seems to have reacted a bit too sensitively to some light criticism of his style but I'm not surprised given my own feelings of disappointment above.
Admin may have made a concerted effort to introduce balance to the forum and that should be applauded but if an occasional lurker like me is noticing problems like the above then I'm sure more regular contributors will be even more aware of them.
