I've said before, people assume we have a Med (80s-style, not now!) climate, and thus get disappointed when things are merely a bit above normal, let alone normal overall.
I know there were a flurry of articles 25-30 years ago saying how global warming would mean we would have a Med climate by 2050, I think it was, so maybe that's where it came from?
All I know is as a kid in the 80s, it was quite special when "80s" appeared in the Today newspaper, or the temperature symbols turned a deep orange on the Beeb forecasts (as they did at 25C). Mind you, that still wasn't as special as the elusive blue sunshine symbol, which you'd see on the charts if there was a sunny ice day!
EDIT: And back to today, the highest dewpoints so far are 19C, in Lydd. There shouldn't be much excitement today, as a brief wedge of fresher air is moving in, but by tomorrow afternoon they'll be on the rise again!
