Was supposed to be travelling to Sheffield on Saturday; the girls are in a comp there. We were making our own way there, but half the squad were going on a coach.

The coach company has now cancelled the journey because 'of the risks of travelling on the M62'. The squad's now pulled out of the competition completely.

FFS. It's two days away. Likely to be less cold by then - and even if not, the road will have been ploughed and gritted.

I was proper looking forward to the drive, too.

Still snowless here except for a dusting in corners. Last chance saloon tomorrow. Last throw of the dice.

Not long now before this event can be described as an utter disaster for SE Kent.

Well we have had the snow..
It’s been very cold...
It’s drifted and looked fantastic...
BUT...
36hrs is not quite enough to really enjoy it...the temperatures are already rising and the powder will soon turn to slush.. this was the first snow since 2010 and a few more days would of been great at least till the end of the weekend.
Seeing young children under 8 having so much fun.. it’s just a shame it all goes down Hill from now on in...

According to the radar it should be snowing but it's not. It's more dry, windy, mind-numbing overcast rubbish

Don't normally venture in here as weather is weather and I rarely get too hot under the collar. However, these past few days promised so much and delivered diddly squat apart from 2 hours of moderate morning snow that settled but melted in the sun before 2pm on Tuesday.
As Steve has said, tomorrow is our last chance saloon..
I shall not hold my breath..

Despite having snow falling for most of the last 4 days, the largest accumulation on the ground at any one time has been just over an inch. We had an amber warning that delivered no snow at all until AFTER the end time of the warning. Even Central London has had more snow on the ground than here...in fact 15 miles in all directions have by and large seen more snow than here. It is currently snowing now, but not adding to the miniscule depth, other than to put a dusting on uncovered surfaces. Our only real chance is tomorrow - maybe the amber warning that is 10 miles to the west will be moved east and give something meaningful...but I'm not holding my breath...

Here in EXETER WE now have heavy freezing rain and ice pellets mixed in with snowflakes and the temp has risen to -1.5c. Horrible out there now as it's frozen the powdery snow that fell for 6 hours and gave 6.5 inches and also making the landscape look icy - some icicles forming from gutter and car now!! This is a real USA styple winter storm - reminded me of the nor'easter i experienced on 16th December 2003 when I was in NEW Jersey. - When it snowed heavily with powdery snow and settled mid morning and became wet snow in afternoon then there were ice pellets /freezing rain early evening!

Haven't posted in this area before. Always left it to the experts, so I shall tread carefully.

Was just about to have a moan about the present winter, making perhaps a reference to 1947. Luckily I looked for info on '47, and found also '63, and so shall not publicly parade my ignorance. The inconveniences caused by our present weather pales into insignificance compared with the suffering
and consequences inflicted by '47. At any time these would have been enormous, but coming after the war the resources available to alleviate things simply did not exist. I just did not realise how dreadful '47 was for many many people.

'47 I can only remember in one way. Things always seemed bigger in your past, and as a toddler I remember what was probably 9-12" of snow as being amazingly high and softly satisfying. Funny how you don't recall the cold. '63 arrived at a time when after the needs of education and early work were met, the only targets left were hormone directed. Sheer bliss, or so it seemed at the time. As I recall there was a certain amount of chilliness about, but only when one was suddenly required to travel 15 miles on a motor bike at 2 am of a winter night, clad only in light jacket, trousers and shirt (and no gloves). But the reception was also softly satisfying. The cold was soon forgotten.

Why wasnt't the Peak District, Pennines and Cumbrian Fells put under a red warning?

The winds were really strong last night here near sea level. You got powdery snow, huge drifts forming, trees reportedly coming down, so why no red warning for these areas?

For here in the Wirral, again the front stalled just to the south of us, literally got within maybe 3 miles of our house... we got some light snow, and there was some patchy small drifts about this morning (1-2 inches near walls) but thats as bad as its been here.

The next front seemingly does the same again stalls or disapates near cheshire, then reforms over northern england.

I dont usually moan - its weather afterall, but honestly - to get so close to seeing proper snow..

Places down south seem to regularly do well for 1-2ft of snow.. Ive never in my life seen anything more than say 5-6inches. It just doesnt happen here.. whereas other places if 1ft snow doesnt fall - its classed as a bad winter.

Roll on spring.

How the hell is the M62 - the main trans-Pennine arterial route between two of the biggest conurbations in the country - still closed?

I get that the snow moved in at a not great time yesterday morning, but come on! It's at the most a foot. I've driven over the tops on that road in a full-on snowstorm where the snow at the side of the motorway was about 6' deep; the motorway was down to 1 lane for most of the high-altitude part with the outside lane under a good foot. Yet we still kept moving. This was at night.

Perhaps the sheer number of vehicles played a part - but that in turn should serve to flatten/melt the snow. I personally think the bedwetting fraternity, those who panic when driving in snow, are heavily to blame. Those and lorry drivers, whose inability to keep their rigs moving up a hill in a straight line was apparently the trigger for the traffic stopping

Whatever, it's an embarrassment that it remains closed after 24 hours.

If the authorities cannot keep the main trans-Pennine route properly ploughed and cleared, then perhaps they should ban lorries from using it when it snows, and fine any mentally-deficient numpty from travelling on it (which would include most women)

It's a disgrace.
