I don't really understand why the M62 is closed still. How can they not even open so much as one lane? It's amazing to think just a few miles away the snow could be even a couple of inches deep. Once again it seems like anywhere in a pretty much straight line west from Manchester has missed out. Just a positioning and altitude issue I guess. Never mind. We'll get all the precipitation come summer!

Woah! Perhaps a touch of political incorrectness creeping in there Saint

My moan is that someone or something has stolen my snow cover overnight! There was a decent covering on the grass when I went to bed but now it's mostly gone with great patches of grass showing through. It can't possibly have thawed as it's still sub zero. I've looked at the west end of the garden looking for it piled up in a drift somewhere but it's not there! Whoever the dirty rotten rascals are I hope they got very cold hands in the process! Just about to call 101 to report it...

It's just nasty here now, -2.2 C with 90% humidity just making it super cold and clammy with the wind still being a fresh easterly - and of course, with the local lack of snow. Even with the heating on full blast with a warm cat laying on my legs, my fingers are feeling like ice.

It's getting beyond a joke now.

No more than 2 inches of snow here this week, and that's the most for over 5 years. We have only had more than 5 inches once in the entire time I've lived in Berkshire (25 years), which was in January 2010 when we got 9 inches. 1-2 feet of snow... never!

In addition to that, I was wondering whether or not, an option could be added (either through website cookies, or as a profile option under the account which a member is logged in under) which would allow a member to change the number of threads which are listed for each page on each forum (this of course, would apply not just to the main weather forum but to all of the other forums as well).

I am aware that this could hinder loading times if more threads are listed on each page, but it would help members to see more of what threads are there and thus, reduce the number of threads which slipping into the obscurity of page 2 and below.

Maybe, something for Brian and the team to think about there.

One example of where this could be useful comes from the fact that a lot of members might not be aware that there is actually already a spring moaning thread since that is down somewhere on page 2 or below.

And another thing...

That train that broke down near the New Forest last evening and has been stuck ever since. The media making out it's yet another example of 'Emma and The Beast' wreaking it's snowmageddon havoc.

It wasn't due to snow. The train was just knackered.

I personally think the train operating company executives should be fined heavily for leaving it be - why the hell did they not send out another locomotive to shunt the broken-down train along to the next station? Probably cost. Profits before people and all that.

This was just posted on UKWeatherworld by a member called Another Weather Enthusiast. I think this is why. The wind was strong and with all that powdery snow, I just can't see how the M62 could safely remain open in that area under those conditions. Yesterday, it resembled the high Pennines down here near sea level. Gawd knows what it was like up there.

I was unlucky enough to be caught up in the M62 chaos. Tried leaving Milnrow (jct 21) on the M62 around 11am to get back to Leeds. During the course of the next 11 hours I tried to find an alternative route. Gridlock traffic everywhere. I eventually gave up and took upon an epic drive to get home - M62 (westbound), M60, M6 (south), A50 to Derby, then followed signs to Nottingham, to join the M1, then up to Leeds. Got home at 01:30 this morning, after been up since 04:30 the previous morning!! 
I was just to the lee side of the Rakewood Viaduct and obviously a Foehn effect was in force due to the easterly crossing the Pennine chain. I hate hysteria and the mainstream media sensationalising, but conditions around there were truly bad. A snow drift trying to leave Littleborough on the A58 was about 9ft high partially blocking one side of the road and the wind was whipping the snow around to near constant white-out conditions. Crazy! 

I like this idea. It conjures up the image of snowdrifts wandering around Lancashire seeking to devour unsuspecting motorists

Sounds like it's frozen in time. 

Another abhorrent day of soul destroying grey skies, vile wind and useless snizzle. Just like the December spell I can’t wait for this to be over but there is no end in sight to this complete and utter hell.

At least in December there were a few days of enjoyment before it was spoilt by cold rain turning it to an icy nightmare. This has been nothing but crap right from the onset

Whilst I know that these cold spells vary a lot for people, around here it has definitely been a notable event. Heavy snow showers on Tuesday and Wednesday followed by the heaviest spell of snow since January 2010 early Thursday and the Met Office's complete fail giving it a yellow warning when it should have at the very least warranted an amber. Also three ice days on the trot (Wednesday, Thursday and most likely today as well) and the coldest March day in a very long time. Yesterday well and truly proved how pathetic March 2013 was around here.

I'd imagine when the statistics come out next week, this week (Monday-Sunday) will probably finish as the coldest week in the UK since December 2010.

You've missed the point

Shows the variability even close by. In MBY both Jan & March 13 delivered much deeper snowfalls (3x >10cm, 1x ~5cm, one or two other coverings). We had deeper snow that this poxy spell has delivered on at three occasions in 2013/14, 2014/15, 2015/16, 2016/17 (including around 7cm on Boxing Day night 2014)

Looks like the latest band of showers are tracking a little too far south for MBY too. Don't even know why I'm looking. I'm a glutton for punishment

And in all those years to come, when people reference this event and talk of it being 'legendary', we'll get that plunging sensation in the pit of our stomachs as we remember our briefly-laying couple of cm's and missing out on all the snowy fun.

I literally no longer know what can produce snow for my area,  Ive tried everything.  

• Frontal snow from the west - marginal


• Frontal snow from the south - Dries out


• Front snow from the south west - Wales shadow effect


• Frontal snow from the east - Pennine snow effect


• Showers from the north west - Marginal - hail and rain


• Showers from the north - No coastal access to moisture


• Showers from the east - Pennine shadow effect

Any of the above only applies in colder air... If this is the summer - literally no effect on precip amounts.  

I think everyone on this board who moans when it doesnt snow doesnt realise how lucky they are.  Snow events that you might consider rare - are maybe 10x rarer for us, yet we have to put up with cooler temps all year round.

This winter has been exceptional.  We have been in prime position on maybe half - a dozen times.  And weve seen little if any snowfall.  We saw 3 cms the other day.  Thats been our lot for this year.  

As march moves on, its beginning to become a pointless task, id rather take spring now.

I think I'm usually (certainly in the last decade or two) in a slightly better position than you (I can recall 6 or 7 falls over 10cm in the past 10 years) but this winter has been an absolute stinker here, with even seemingly nailed-on conditions for snow in December falling as either rain, sleet or too-wet snow. Then there's this non-event. I know people joke about 'snow shields', but watching the radar has been just like watching a snow shield in action.

Give me a Greenland High with a huge Scandy Low feeding in snowy fronts on a NNW'ly any day.
