Good to see Cook and Root make it to the close of play yesterday. WIth Watson and Smith both making a hundred each the English batsmen need to respond. We need a big 100 from Cook or Root.

If England bat out tomorrow a draw looks likely and in some ways this test seems to be about personal battles for find form in to the 6th test in Brisbane in a few months time.

I am not too concerned if this test ends a draw so long as England have matched Australia and it is not like Old Trafford.

Overall a comfortable series win for England but they have made this awful Aussie team look a lot better than they really are

Woakes has the potential to be a reasonable replacement for Bresnan as a bowler who can bat (No.8).

Kerrigan has by all accounts performed very well in the Lions and for Lancashire.  If Monty is out of contention then we need to be looking for the next Swann.

Painfully slow run rate once again from England 2 runs an over, we really have batted poorly this summer yet to make 400 in 7 Tests.

I like this email in the TMS inbox:

Ray Abis, TMS inbox: Surely England are treating their reply on a flat pitch with unnecessary caution. On the principal of doing next what the opposition least expects, I would send out Matt Prior and then Kevin Pietersen with a licence. If the ploy fails, Ian Bell will refloat the ship.

Also agree with this one. About as boring a session as you can get. Very much going through the motions.

Sam Sheringham - BBC Sport at The Oval
"There's a real end-of-term feel at The Oval, with the game meandering along and the players seemingly ticking off the hours until they can all go home. How long before the umpires let them get the board games out or hit them with an end-of-series quiz?"

This is a Test match not some Mickey Mouse limited overs knock about. One session yielding 65-70 runs isn't an issue. I'd take that over 125-3 at Lunch.

Cook is averaging 27 in this series with 3 50s. Not great given his previous form but certainly not remotely enough to be dropped, even if he wasn't captain.

Exciting innings from Root. Boycott would have been proud of that one.

:-)

It's the problem with too much limited overs cricket: people (who should know better) think a normal session of cautious Test cricket is a failing...

Just saw the batting order on the TV screen - Woakes at 6, Prior at 7...... I rest my case about the stupidity of suggesting that England are being too cautious.

Tea: 181-3

Pieterson 29, Bell 4

Should make 250 by the close, perhaps 275 if KP is still there.

3 or 4 down overnight would be fine.

Two days to play, almost certainly some lost time tomorrow.  Say 10 hours of cricket left after today.  Assuming England save the follow-on comfortably then there's not enough time left to force a result.

England need one of the top 3 to be a stroke maker, IMO like Trescothick in the early 2000s. No good the top 3 grinding out 100 odd runs in 5 hours.
