Umpires coming out to inspect. Surfaces have been pretty dry down here so i imagine things should get going relatively quickly.

Siddle out, lets hope they can get a few more quickly.

Anyone explain why the wonderful Captain Cook let Austraila hammer us for 4 an over for 32 overs before bringing on Swann who immediately took a wicket??

Worth pointing out yet another diabolical forecast and even nowcast from the MetO. Alex on 5Live said at 9am this morning that the rain was gone. Maybe an outside chance of a shower later in the afternoon.

Saturday looks like being showery. Who knows whether The Oval will cop nothing at all or a succession of heavy showers. If you know the answer to that then you should be working for the "MetO/BBC/industrial/military complex"..... If they'll have you...... ;-)

Meanwhile, England 8-0 after 4 overs in pursuit of 293 as a first target.

Cook 9, Root 0 so far. Root doing a great job of finding the fielders so far, when he can reach the bowling. Stark just bowled an over of mostly ill-directed rubbish.

There are so many so-called experts volunteering personal opinions in the media. Some are best ignored, I think.

Frankly I think keeping the Aussies to under 500 was a decent effort. Very high 1st innings totals are almost the norm at The Oval.

Edit: Boycott would have considered a strike rate of 21 per 100 balls as flamboyant.....

Good to see Cook and Root make it to the close of play yesterday. WIth Watson and Smith both making a hundred each the English batsmen need to respond. We need a big 100 from Cook or Root.

If England bat out tomorrow a draw looks likely and in some ways this test seems to be about personal battles for find form in to the 6th test in Brisbane in a few months time.

I am not too concerned if this test ends a draw so long as England have matched Australia and it is not like Old Trafford.

Unless England balls it up tomorrow then a draw looks a certainty, as Saturday currently looks like a total washout. Which probably means it'll be dry and sunny

Personally I would like England to make 650 and stick the Aussies back in for 3 hours on Sunday (assuming Saturday isn't a total wash-out) and nick out the top 6, just to set up the next series down-under...
