Honestly, is this sort of shite any better than the stuff the Express and Star put out? Yes, it's a PA story - and it's written for a supposedly more 'sophisticated' audience of tree hugging, muesli chomping beardies who attend dinner parties occasionally (when they can be bothered to dispense with their woolly jumpers) - but the underlying theme is the same.

Sadly the Met Office not going for a prolonged cold spell and seem to suggest a return to S W winds by early Dec.

Which is a bit odd as I dont see a return to zonal in the models.

UK Outlook for Friday 22 Nov 2013 to Sunday 1 Dec 2013:

Many western and northern areas will be mainly dry and fine at first with a few wintry showers. Southern and eastern parts of the UK will be cloudier with a greater risk of showers, perhaps heavy near North Sea coasts. Showers are likely to fall as snow over high ground, and it will be cold generally with overnight frosts. Thereafter, it will probably stay mainly dry and settled in northwestern areas but rather cold with a raw easterly wind. Southern and eastern parts are likely to stay unsettled with further wintry showers but these will tend to increasingly fall as rain. Towards the end of the month there are signs that temperatures may return nearer to normal with more unsettled weather affecting northern and western Britain.

UK Outlook for Saturday 23 Nov 2013 to Monday 2 Dec 2013:

Many western and northern areas will be mainly dry and fine next weekend, but with overnight fog patches slow to clear. Southern and eastern parts of the UK will be cloudier with wintry showers, perhaps heavy near North Sea coasts. It will be cold generally with overnight frosts and a risk of ice, strong winds accentuating the cold in the southeast. Thereafter, it will probably stay mainly dry and settled in northwestern areas but rather cold, especially at first. Southeastern parts are likely to see wintry showers initially, but these will tend to fade with time. Towards December, there is probably little change, but temperatures may return nearer to normal with the north and west becoming more unsettled.

Perhaps we really have been spoilt these last few years, because charts and forecasts like that would of had the place in overload mode pre-2009.

Just said on BBC Points West that the gritting stations here have more grit than ever before. If anything is guaranteed to nail a mild winter it is that 😂

Owing to the media, I am seeing many old grannies etc talking of heavy snow and severe cold which will last for weeks.... shivering and chattering before their teeth drop into their coffees. This is in Portsmouth too.... a city in the top 3 of having the least amount of snow in the UK.

Joe public are very confused with the media hype.

It is a mystery why people keep falling for overhyped weather scare stories. But I think the reason is that most people don't expect their newspapers to lie about the weather. They expect lies and exaggeration about news stories, sport and celebrity gossip, but not something like the weather

I can do better. My forecast for winter 2015/2016 , is the coldest winter since the last ice age. Three large Arctic hurricanes will make their way south and drop 50 feet of snow over most of the UK, evacuation to mexico will be the only feasible option. Tempertures during the storm will fall at a rate of 10C per minute and could reach as low as -90C. The cold weather is expected to be triggered when the remaing part of the lassen ice shelf breaks off antartica, and finally stops the gulf stream. My advice to everyone would be to bunker down in the nearest library and try to avoid any tsumanis that just happen to be there. Oh and watch out for wolves...
