South West Trains

tweets: No trains running on any
route before 07:30 on Tuesday 24 December to allow each line to be checked to
ensure safety

From BBC News feed

Also Bilbao ferry can't dock and is 'riding the storm' out at sea.

In retrospect perhaps this one may have warranted a RED but let's not get hasty whilst the event is ongoing.

I tought the winds would of died back a little by now but sat indoors it still terrible out there, sounds like a freight train mixed with deep rumbles of thunder.

The roar of the wind and the sight of the rain hurtling past in the amber-lit sky is something I won't forget in a hurry!

Watching the squall line close to the west, and it looks like the tail-end of it might just about clip me, before that curious dry wedge moves across. There then looks to be another squall front on the SW edge of that dry slot - and it does seem to be further west than one would expect based on the latest model data.

That probably means that the strongest winds will be hitting a bit further west, encompassing the Solent region.

Almost a hint of a LEWP structure on that squall line; also two or three split lines evident indicating perhaps a detached pre-frontal zone further South.
Busy night for sure.

Seems  to be slightly less extreme outside now, but that may be  due to local topography, the wind had swung around more towards the south.

Rain ceased after 15 hours. Just blustery now. Spent several days last month clearing and mending gutters, drains and lower walls that the previous owners left silted over and/or broken. Looking time well spent now. Practising my smug look for tomorrow morning when walking past those neighbouring properties which boast shrubbery growing out of drains and downpipes.

So... there's a marked dry wedge and then a streak of cloud shooting into it, with cloud tops cooling and a squall line intensifying very rapidly.

Something tells me that's not a good thing to see...?

The winds actually seemed to take a dip for a moment just now, and I can see that the original leading squall front is dieing a death down here.

Based on the above and what I can see here:

http://earth.nullschool.net/#current/wind/isobaric/1000hPa/orthographic=-18.78,52.92,1209

It seems to be that the strongest winds might be an hour or so away yet...?

Either that or the second squall line is seperated from the band of strongest winds... but in that case I'd have to question that isobaric wind data!
