If people run around like headless chickens some of these things may indeed happen. Given much of the nonsense that normally spreads on social media the real danger is the perception of risk not the actual threat (if that makes sense). I’m just glad we don’t react to the much more prevalent and established flu viruses in the same way.

Referring to a point Chris made, in reality if the virus was more deadly it would almost certainly spread more slowly. The most deadly viruses quite often tend to be self-limiting. The biggest threat would be one that mutated to become very slow acting, highly contagious and with high mortality. Thankfully Covid-19 doesn’t fit that description based on all available evidence.

Ebola for instance, has a 60% lethality rate but you need very close and sustained contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person to get infected yourself.

Some hellish combination of the two (the infectivity of COVID-19 and the lethality of Ebola) would be the largest crisis humanity has ever faced. If such a thing ever did develop, I'd imagine by now there would be a complete shutdown of all international travel (even daily life would now be severely restricted, to be honest).

As for COVID-19, there's now a reason for the Italians to be concerned, but not worried. Even on a European scale, I'm not concerned at this stage. I'm pretty sure the Italian authorities will put a lid on it fairly quickly, especially with school and workplace shutdowns being called.

It’s worth noting that a return flight from Manchester to Singapore on Tuesday (2 week holiday) with Air France is £361 at the moment. Via the Kayak app.

Because of this virus there will be some absolute bargain flight prices over the next few weeks and possibly months, especially if you book last minute.

Every cloud and all that.

Well, things are spiralling towards a full scale pandemic - South Korea, Iran, Italy. Turkey, Pakistan and Afghanstan have all closed their borders with Iran, but it is going to be too late - I simply do not believe that the virus is not already established in Pakistan and as for Iraq - no hope. Once the virus gets into Syria, then it will spread throughout the refugee camps like wildfire and then be spread via people heading elsewhere.

Austria and France are seriously considering suspending Schengen and closing their borders with Italy.

The WHO doesn't have the power to do that and it doesn't indulge in the sort of dramatic overreaction prevalent amongst some contributors. Nor does it, or anyone else, have the benefit of hindsight.

Wonder what the demographics were on the cruise? The old trope is that they're for the well fed, the newly-wed and the nearly dead. If it's the latter then no surprise that they're dying...

Why does Gandalf always have to stick his oar in? This is fact: "Austria have refused entry of a train from Italy tonight."

Amusing comment from Retron regarding cruises - as I stated previously, I would have to be paid handsomely to go on a cruise myself.

Seems to be dying down in China. However things really taking off outside. Within a week we can expect the number of daily cases in the rest of the world to exceed the daily cases in China (which is now in the hundreds rather than thousands).

2023/2024 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):
29/11 (-6), 30/11 (-6), 02/12 (-5), 03/12 (-5), 04/12 (-3), 16/01 (-3), 18/01 (-8), 08/02 (-5)

Total: 8 days with snow/sleet falling.

2022/2023 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):

18/12 (-1), 06/03 (-6), 08/03 (-8), 09/03 (-6), 10/03 (-8), 11/03 (-5), 14/03 (-6)

Total: 7 days with snow/sleet falling.

2021/2022 Snow days (approx 850hpa temp):

26/11 (-5), 27/11 (-7), 28/11 (-6), 02/12 (-6), 06/01 (-5), 07/01 (-6), 06/02 (-5), 19/02 (-5), 24/02 (-7), 30/03 (-7), 31/03 (-8), 01/04 (-8)
Total: 12 days with snow/sleet falling.

Facts are fine, of course. But that’s different to misinformation and misunderstanding, of which you have been guilty a number of times in this thread.
