Heard today that a local secondary school went ahead with a school trip to Italy on Monday, which seems rather foolhardy. (My previous employer banned all travel to Italy over a week ago.)

Are there cruises for younger people? I suppose not

Loads of families and the average age was probably younger than us. It was pricey enough to put off the scruffs looking for a week-long p*ss-up party, but not exorbitant; we had a duplex cabin with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, two TV's, two fridges, a sitting area with table, and a huge balcony with a hot tub. The drinks package we had was brilliant and I lived a week in a state varying from jauntily merry to well oiled. Amazing entertainment (Circe du Soleil have a show on there), and I even avoided losing much in the casino. Overall for less money than we spent on our Florida holiday.

Maunder's got a typically jaundiced view of cruises.

That suggests people are still booking flights as much as they always have. Some flights, at least.

There were plenty of us weeks ago saying that cruises in the region should have been suspended straight away - now the issue is global. I am pretty sure those on the Diamond Princess now fervently wish they had never gone on that cruise. Problem is, that whenever Quantum, me or some others have been pointing out the likely spread of this thing from the outset, we were dismissed as "scaremongering", or "panicking" yet now we are where we are. If people like Quantum had been listened to from the outset (I mean those who advise governments), perhaps the global situation might be less serious now.

The point, which you've missed spectacularly yet again, is that your judgement is c**p.

On the one hand you're advocating draconian measures and then you have the nerve to question the social and economic cost in China of their measures to stop the virus. Increasingly I wonder what planet you're on.

I'll leave you to emulate a headless chicken whilst the sane amongst us just react proportionally to the threat.

Look at Italy, if you want to see where we are headed. The only positive at the moment, is that summer is coming.

The point about China is the steps they had to take - as many commentators have stated, they are not the kind of steps which would be acceptable in a western democracy.

Everything that MM, Q and I have stated has come to pass. The irony is, we are still only at the tip of the iceberg.

The discussion in here has become more serious as events have unfolded, particularly from those people who were saying certain individuals were scare mongering. Plenty of those people would have scoffed at us if we had even suggested that 220m school children would be away from school only a few weeks ago

Anyway, interesting event in Greece. A group of pensioners had travelled last week to the 'Holy Lands' in Israel with a one day excursion in Egypt. 21 out of 24 of them are now infected and health authorities are now trying to find and isolate their 400-500 contacts since their return.
