Putting someone on a icu ventilator is something that should not and is not  taken lightly as it comes with the risk of ventilator assisted phenomena (vap) my son had this it is caused by invasion of the lower respiratory tract and lung parenchyma by microorganisms via the ventilator tube it’s a huge risk in its own right.

About a quarter of severe and critical cases require mechanical ventilation while the remaining 75% require only oxygen supplementation."

The Chinese used Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) with relatively good results, but the WHO says that this is very resource consuming.

Yes and the ventilator has to be turned down very slowly when the time is right with skill and patients sometimes unfortunately with failed attempts as the body also gets used to not doing this action at all

Forgot to add sometimes Nitric oxide is used with oxygen to delate the lung blood vessels making it easier for lungs to inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide.

We have an ageing population, and to some degree it’s devastating the risk this virus poses. The elderly and immune compromised are still people, and it feels like they are just being dismissed.

Yes it will be a problem who gets the icu beds for example, with patients possibly waiting for icu are they going to put age restrictions and priority for say patient under 65? (Example used)

someone will have to make a decision who gets what

Hoping it’s nowhere as bad as that at any stage.

While younger people may not succumb like the older generation they will still be knocked off their feet. The damage to the economy and productivity is going to be significant.

Yes, certain groups are at much higher risk, and they should take appropriate measures to protect themselves and minimise contact with the general population (and the govt should legislate to force employers to grant leeway in such circumstances)

But what will negatively impact the economy way more than a few thousand severe cases, is an overreaction forced upon EVERYONE whether they give a crap or not.

Like I said, if you're in a high risk group, take appropriate steps to isolate yourself. Just let the rest if us carry on with ordinary life.

The FCO have got around to updating their travel advice  - still nowhere near strong enough in my view. Personally, in my opinion, they should advise against all but essential travel to anywhere in Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Austria or Germany.

Here is the updated advice from the FCO:

""The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all but essential travel to the following areas in northern Italy, due to an ongoing outbreak of coronavirus (Covid-19) and various control and isolation measures imposed by the Italian authorities on 8 March.

"Lombardy region (which includes the cities of Milan, Bergamo, Como) and the provinces of Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia and Rimini (all in Emilia Romagna); Pesaro e Urbino (in Marche); Alessandria, Asti, Novara, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola and Vercelli (all in Piemonte); Padova. Treviso and Venice (in Veneto).

"British nationals remain able to depart Italy without restriction. Residents of other parts of Italy are permitted to leave the isolation areas to return home."

If the government or the public overreacts, then hundreds of thousands of people can lose their jobs and even their homes. It's a difficult balance to get right, but so far I think we are doing relatively well.

The long term economic damage will end up killing more people than the virus itself. Whatever happens from now onwards we are going into a deep recession doubled by Hard Brexit. job losses, mental breakdowns and Dickensian levels of poverty will lead to many thousands of deaths. And yet I’m confident the morons will still vote Tory

As an aside, if this Covid-19 does get out of hand and thousands of pensioners die, I think we should push for a second referendum, given it'll be mostly Brexit supporters who'll have popped their clogs (assuming clogs aren't deemed too European for idiotic nationalists)

Now is the time to stay home.

Yes it will be very hard to explain and handle in a special school environment but I do really appreciate what you do for those children as do many do here.

It's a tricky situation and just thinking about my own school, we have many more staff than mainstream primaries and obviously much fewer children. Whenever an illness does the rounds it sweeps through school - before Christmas we had nearly half of the school off sick with a combination of flu and norovirus.

Most of our children have no understanding of hygiene issues and at the same time most of them require much more physical contact than would be seen in a mainstream school. Most of our kids can't transition from one place to another without holding hands, they can bite, scratch, kick, spit in your face, cough and sneeze all over you, climb on you, many are still in nappies etc.

At the same time on one of our two sites there is a section of school where many of the children have underlying health issue and these children mix freely with others when not in class. Maybe he sensible thing would be to close the school but then what would the parents do?

Do we wait till we have a confirmed case, do we carry on till we drop. I have no idea what's for the best.

He had recently returned from Italy and was being treated at the hospital's specialist infectious diseases unit."

I am sorry, but if he had underlying health problems, why on earth did he travel to Italy in the first place? (unless he was already there when the proverbial hit the fan of course).
