My daughters school sent this out last night at approx 7.30pm....

I am writing to update you on the latest government guidance issued this evening which will affect whether you decide to send your child into school tomorrow.

The new guidance is that if anyone is suffering from symptoms of a new continuous cough and/or a temperature of over 37.8° they should stay at home for 14 days. Children should also stay at home if they are living with someone with symptoms for 14 days.

I am afraid that this new guidance will now make it very difficult indeed for us to sustain manageable staffing levels in the long term. Whilst the government clearly want schools to stay open, I need to ensure that we have enough staff both to safeguard and to teach our children. We will do all we can to prioritise the teaching of our Year 11 and Year13 students, but it is likely that at some point this week, I will need to enact a partial, or full, closure. We will make sure you are informed of this as early as we can, but at present please assume the school is open unless you hear otherwise.

Thank you for your continuing support and please be assured that my thoughts are with all of you at this very challenging time for everyone.

Yours sincerely
YNWA

Partial shutdown (at the very least) is inevitable in the coming days. The "don't go out for 14 days if someone in your house has a cough" will close schools even if the government won't.

It’s seems the government is trying very hard to not lead and let everyone else make up there own minds. This will end in tears

This is the bit I don't get , you are right though they are desperately trying to get to Easter with this but then what ?

Edit:  That is of course notwithstanding schools having to close partially, or fully due to staff self isolating, as per Darren’s post.

The fact is, it’s difficult for anyone to plan anything under the circumstances and we all have to be prepared for overnight changes.  It’s an ongoing situation that we will all need to adapt to quickly.

It is madness keeping schools open.

I would be very surprised if the schools open again before September once they do shut, given that 12 weeks of isolation is being talked about for the elderly.

So far the plan today here is to stay open, but "collapse classes"... that apparently depends on enough pupils being off to allow classes to be merged, however.

We don't have enough staff already (and it's only 7:20!) to run the school as normal.

Two people on my Facebook went out last night one to a pub and one to a club. I’ve called out there irresponsible actions.

This is the problem. People are still no adhering.

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am struggling to sleep properly at the moment. Waking at random hours.

I wonder today how many teachers will turn up to work. I suspect that school closures will talked about a lot today.

DearBoris

I didn't feel the press conference yesterday really clarified anything - there was lots of stuff about not congregating but mostly on an advisory basis. In my case, the message about self-isolating for 12 weeks was promoted - but when does it start? What about medical/carer visits? Can I go out and do shopping if I pick quiet times and keep my distance (online deliveries are struggling with eg Ocado refusing new customers) as in my case nearly all the neighbours are elderly so local help schemes won't work.

Your, muddled

Then there's the exit strategy. What happens in 12 weeks' time if the virus is still around? Are HM Govt betting on an early breakthrough in vaccine production? Otherwise this scenario could continue indefinitely.

From a personal point of view, one of the worst things for me is when do I visit my parents again? They are both around 70 but bearing that in mind neither are really high risk i would have thought (eg my dad does things like 20-30 mile walks in a day sometimes). However, the thought of indirectly killing one or both of your parents is a pretty frightening thought. I am next due to go back in early May so i guess i have time to see how things pan out before making a decision. Having spoken to others my age it seems a pretty common concern.

My wife’s parents came over for lunch on Sunday and waving them off felt very strange knowing we may not be able to do the same for months.

Schools being open or closed is not going to stop the demand for ICU beds. The only action that will do that is for vulnerable groups to isolate immediately. If they are isolated then they are safe.

Everybody’s circumstances are exactly the same: we all have a responsibility to prevent this virus killing tens, maybe hundreds, of thousands of people.

What is also clear is that the printing presses must be switched on TODAY and hundreds of billions of pounds helicoptered to every business and every person in this country.

This must happen immediately. Otherwise the economy will collapse and never recover.
