Having been outside there's no sign whatsoever of the showers that have passed over... they were only ligh on the radar and I suspect they did indeed evaoprate before reaching the ground. That's explain the rise in dewpoint too (as it's now 17.3C and rising - it feels almost tropical outside).


Maidstone doesn't have an official station btw, but East Malling (less than 4 miles away) does. For once we have a station in an ideal position for today's expected flow!


EDIT: There's another shower allegedly in progress now, but it's still dry. The dewpoint's still rising steadily though, it's 17.5C now.

Met Office appear to be reporting an overnight LOW of 26C in parts of the south east. Think it could be a new record.


Here temperatures fell to 18.2C.

That 26C was the Langdon Bay reading. However the temperature there has dropped off significantly in the past couple of hours. A minimum of 22.3C was recorded which is impressive but nowhere near the record of 23.9C set in Brighton in 1990.


The overnight cloud is just clearing here right on cue. Another hot day ahead.

I suspect that when the sun eventually returns the dewpoint is going to rocket!

Predicting cloud cover today looks like being impossible but if somewhere in EA or SE can stay significantly cloud free most of the day then 100f is on.

This really goes to show just how dire the summers are up in northeast England.. 


From the metoffice this evening:


"This Evening and Tonight:


Fine during the evening, with some hazy sunny spells. Tending to become cloudier and cooler from the northwest as the night progresses, leading to areas of mist, fog and low cloud developing later in the night in light winds. Minimum temperature 7 °C."


 


Yes that's a regional low of 7C in August  Whilst the southeast of the country bakes with overnight lows in the 20's.

More indicative of the sharp temp range across the country,. The lakes and Scotland were cooler than the NE.


Those forecasts are not really helpful or consistant  anyway. 7c,  yes only in some Northumberland highland location  Most parts of the NE were 12-13c overnight. Also Benson got down to 15c but the SE forecast said no lower than 18c.

It wasn't erroneous, lots of PWS were reporting similar values (at a time when there's no sun to worry about, of course). Quite what caused it... not sure, even Calais was several degrees lower at the same time. I suspect the cloud would have helped, until it started raining that is!


Langdon's reporting 25C again btw, so it's already warmed back up again.

Arome has toned down today a touch but shifted the heat up from Sussex coast to Kent and London. 35C in a few places.

After a fresher evening and night tonight, Sunday rises from a slow start to 35C again.

GFS has some 34s on Monday.

My min is 23.5 c at 5.45 am and has already reached 27 c at 8 am, even with more in the way of cloud cover. I think Folkestone is now the new Singapore.

The MetO automated forecast has toned down max temperatures by 2C today. So a top temp of 30C in Wye (170m below us). I don't expect Hastingleigh to get above 30C which will be a huge relief.

At 4 am is was still recording 26.1 but a light rain shower around 4 ish (no evidence on the ground or the rainguage) allowed for a fall back to 22.2c at 06:30.


Its a cloudy start here this morning but that hasn't stopped the temperature reaching 26.6c already.


The clearance is moving in from the south. Its going to be an unbearable one.


The current dewpoint is 19.4c !

I just followed the link from last July’s thread so I could see what the Cambridge Botanic Garden figure would be once it updates at 0900Z... and it seems the UK record holder hasn’t reported since April??

There is a good deal of thick cloud over North West France this morning. They appear to be decaying thunderstorms. I fear all that cloud could be heading towards the south of England.


EDIT: Checking the direction of flow again, perhaps it will only affect the extreme south east.
