Edinburgh has never had an official tropical night as far as I know, but it turns out that Scotland which has had at least two tropical nights in the past.

To that end, I have come across this BBC report from 26 July 2019, the day after Edinburgh had its hottest day on record with a maximum temperature of 31.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank (you will probably also recognize that as being the same day that the UK as a whole, had its hottest day on record with the botanic gardens in Cambridge being the location where that actually happened).

It turns out that on the following night, Scotland had its warmest night on record at that time (I don't know of that having been beaten since then) with an overnight minimum temperature of 20.9°C at Achnagart in NW Scotland, a location which you wouldn't exactly typically associate with high temperature records.

Prior to that, the previous record was 20.6°C but for Scotland as a whole to have had its warmest night on record last night, that above value of 20.9°C is the figure to beat. From what I have read on one particular post on this thread though, that is not likely to have happened on this occasion.

I remember making a similar point years ago when I was more active on here. At a time when evidence of climate change is ever more valuable closing recording stations seemed destined (and designed?) to reduce data availability and therefore close down any room for challenge. In reality it was more likely to do with costs saving, but the end result is that we have less information available.

If I want to know what the temperature was in Leeds today I have to rely on Bingley (Samos), 13 miles away and 218 metres asl. Maximum there today 27.1C, which seems undercooked (pun intended).

I do wonder how hot the northern cities will get early next week , I suspect some records will fall. I’ll be keeping an eye on this link, http://whitworth.cas.manchester.ac.uk/current/index.html

It’s as accurate as we’ll get for the inner city.

Warmer again today.

20.0c has just been attained at 07.55; this time yesterday it was 17.0c.

It's a shame regarding the lack of stations.
2019 - Sheffield recorded a record maximum as it has a weather station, but impossible for records to be broken where there is no longer a station.

I think the old adage that just because something didn't happen it doesn't mean that it shouldn't have happened springs to mind.

Excess deaths from the 1976 heatwave were around 20% above normal.

Should also add that 32c is very different to 40c

[/quote

he excess death figure  for heat related deaths was higher for 2020 so we are not exactly learning anything then?

More oppressive this morning then yesterday, now its cloudy. 24C already should easily break 30 if the sun pops through later.

ST James's Park had already hit 27.3C by 10am (2100Z-0900Z max, hourly temp was 26.5C).

Certainly feeling less fresh now with some hazy sunshine coming through.

At 11am local time, Motril on the south coast of Spain was reporting 37.8C with a dewpoint of 22.3C.

Talking of Spain, the high-res GFS has maxima of 40C or above every day right up until the end of the run at 240 hours. So another 10 straight days of 40C+ temperatures on top of the 5 they have already had.

Charlwood already at 30.5C at 12 noon. Not sure there's much heating left in today though.

Amazing day here with no sunshine and temperatures now over 28C. Can't recall this sort of thing here before.

Lows of 20/21C across Leeds last night. Most uncomfortable night since 2019.

Much cooler today, currently 23C with cloudy skies. A few spots of rain earlier that amounted to nothing.

I suspect the rain radar is overdoing it. I don't think much will reach the ground. No sign of rain here although according to the radar it is almost upon us.
