Shap and Benson both had a low of -8.5C up to 6am. I expect somewhere probably went a bit lower.

can’t believe that the lowest locally about -3dc then quickly up to 4dc with everything melting. After such sustained cold I thought we’d have frost on ground all day and icedays.  What synoptics outwith spring weather and higher longer sun leads to this scenario in early Dec?  Didn’t see any suggestion of ‘warm sectors’

Overnight low here was -3.7. We crept to 0.1c today under increasing cloud, currently -0.5c overcast and a bit murky. I'd be confident in saying it'll be the coldest day of this spell but if we do so the snow/rain later I suspect that'll be accompanied by some milder air picked up over the channel which will spoil things somewhat.

This is the first night where clear skies and light winds coincide with deep fresh snow in the Highlands - the perfect recipe for extreme minima.

It has already fallen to -9.4C at a couple of stations in the glens and it's anyone's guess how low they can go tonight. UKV was hinting at -19 as the lowest hourly temperature around 0900 tomorrow although the other models were typically -10 to -12.

Maximum 6am to 6pm at Odiham down the road was a chilly -1.7C but the temperature is slowly rising now, up to -1.4C at 7pm. Must be overspill of heat from the illegal rain showers to the east.

Lowest now at Corgarff in Upper Donside at -14.4C. Several locations in the Scottish Borders near -12C so it's not exclusively a Highlands affair.

Given the extreme heat we had in the summer and now this cold spell, I wonder if this year could be a contender for the greatest range in temperatures? 40°C in summer, then -20-something in December would definitely be something to remember this year for.

As at 11pm GMT (23:00 UTC) tonight, the temperature here in Edinburgh was already down to -4.9°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and around -6°C at Edinburgh Airport.

This means that tonight will now go down as our coldest night of this entire year so far, regardless of what happens between now and the end of the night (which is officially the start of the next observation day at 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) tomorrow morning).
The north of Edinburgh, usually always missing out on snow events which occur not just within the rest of Scotland or the UK, but also within the rest of Edinburgh.
