Moderate to heavy snow has been falling here the past 20 mins adding to the overnight showers. About 5-6cm and counting. Lovely to see on Dec 1st 🙂

It was a clear dawn, with a white ground frost glistening on the roads and grass.

The overnight low was 1.1.

Then, in the last 15 minutes, some convective cloud has moved in from the North Sea, puffy and ragged-looking.

Eagerly awaiting what could be the first sleet of the season... the heavens opened and it's now chucking it down with rain, not even a single flake of sleet amongst it. Pah.

1.3, dew 0.1.

A wintry scene here. -6 C with a hoar frost and a sprinkling of snow. Low lying freezing fog visible in the north of Edinburgh.

Very seasonal for 1st December

A heavier burst of rain (9mm/hour rainfall rate) has turned sleety here, despite temperatures having risen since the earlier rain.

2.1, dew 1.1.

EDIT: And as soon as I posted that, there was a loud whooshing sound... it turned to slushy ice pellets, heavy enough to leave a slight covering on rooves and grass. It's stopped now and has melted quickly.

White Rabbits everyone, and welcome to the winter of 2023/24.

Here in Edinburgh, this winter has started off on a very cold and frosty note and in fact, last night was our coldest night of the overall autumn/winter season so far by some considerable amount as last night's overnight temperatures got down to -6.01°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank, around -6°C at Edinburgh Airport and -3.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

The only downside is that last night's overnight minimum will officially count as part of the autumn statistics as the first observation day of the winter didn't start until 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning. This means that last night will go down in the final statistics as the coldest night of the autumn, and the coldest night of November.

However, we are now into that first official observation day of the winter which means that if the temperature doesn't suddenly rise above freezing within the next hour, the first official air frost of the winter will already have been recorded, even in the highly unlikely event of it suddenly getting a lot milder later on (that is unlikely to happen and if anything, there is even the chance of at least one ice day being recorded over the next few days).

Somehow, we have managed to avoid all of the snow here in NW Edinburgh which just about everyone else has been getting, even here in Edinburgh but it's still looking very white out there anyway with all of the frost which is around.

Meanwhile, the temperature at 9am GMT (09:00 UTC) this morning was still down around -5°C here in Edinburgh.

Rain turned into a wet snow shower at 9.15. The weather station took an impressive dip as the snow line descended.

Really pleased !

The temperature in all of today's sunshine has now risen above freezing in many parts of Edinburgh (currently +1°C at Edinburgh Airport and +1.6°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank) but the temperature as at 12 noon GMT (12:00 UTC) was still at -1.7°C and so, an official ice day is still possible at that particular station during today as I write.

For now, we are just clinging on to a possible ice day with our finger nails, but that temperature will no doubt probably go above freezing in the next hour and then that will be that.

However, there is still a lot of frost around in those shaded areas which never see any sunshine all day at this time of the year (we are only 3 weeks away from the winter solstice after all).

The temperature at Swanston in the south of Edinburgh and at Musselburgh (technically not a part of Edinburgh as it is part of East Lothian, but I include that with the Edinburgh stations since it isn't any further away from Edinburgh's city centre than Edinburgh Gogarbank and since there are no official stations within the east of Edinburgh itself) were exactly bang on 0°C at that time, but the temperature has to always be below freezing for an ice day to be recorded which means that any temperature which is either bang on freezing (as is the case here) or above means no ice day on that day.

However, there are no other official stations within East Lothian that I know of and the temperature at Charterhall in the Scottish Borders was still at -1.9°C at that same time, so parts of East Lothian and the Borders could well get an official ice day today.

Can't really compare with above but already below minus 2 here at half 5. Very cold walk with the hound this evening. Grass sparkling in the torch light. Picked out some glowing eyes blinking back at me across one field (fox I assume) and an owl swooped down through the beam. What a treat

Looks like being an official ice day in the Scottish Borders at least, as today's maximum temperature at Charterhall was only -0.5°C.

Here in Edinburgh, those all important maximum temperatures were 2.0°C at Edinburgh Gogarbank and 1.9°C at the botanic gardens in Edinburgh.

That isn't enough to make today our coldest day of this year, but today was our coldest day since 16 January 2023 and our second coldest day of this year so far.

Meanwhile, the temperatures have dropped below freezing once again and as early as 6pm GMT (18:00 UTC), are already down to around -3°C here in Edinburgh more generally, but down to around -4°C at Swanston in the south of Edinburgh.
