Yes an amazing event for the southern and central lakes.

Quite unusual.

I think a lesson is to be learned here. A fairly non descript typically rather cold, slack set up close to the winter solstice at face value (similar to last year), can and will provide plenty of surprises.

This particular so called 'cool blip' with -5c to -6c uppers has left me impressed.

1. Yesterday mornings light rain turning to a period of light snow at 10am in the morning. A high of just 3.4c
2. The effortless drop from 1c to -2c at 8pm last night (bear in mind our usual entire winter minima is usually -3c)
3. Last nights snow showers across East Kent providing a reasonable event in a slack flow.
4. A practical ice day out of nowhere.
5. A genuine freezing fog event in coastal Folkestone (currently -1.9c) is extremely rare, I've not recorded one in all of my years of recording weather (25 years at least).
6. Biggest bonus is being able to record falling snow in the diary for the two opening of December/Winter.

Clearly a major snow event in Cumbria today, focussed on the west and south coast inland towards Ambleside and Shap. Much of the north of the county hasnt seen anything
Broughton in Furness 30cm (unverifield)
Ambleside 18cm
 15cm wideley in other places.
The fell tops must have had perhaps double those values so good luck if you are venturing up there tomorrow.
Even had thunder and lightning reported.
M6 over Shap and Tebay, single file traffic and 20mph, HGV,s all over the place.

Yes, all due to vigorous convection over the Irish Sea. There's even been considerable lightning activity out there.

The various people saying northerlies are no longer cold and snow events are almost impossible apart from in the far north might shut up for a bit anyway.

Snowing again, but still only very light.

Radar suggests a better-organised clump of ppn has got past the Welsh mountain gatekeepers. We'll see.

Finally!

Moderate snow, sticking readily. PPN band is still fragmented, so I don't expect this to last, but perhaps more showers like this could lay down a cm or two by morning.

Up in Cumbria, the snow continues to pile in (looks to also affect a little further north, too - at least as far as Keswick). I reckon some places will be under 18" of snow come tomorrow.

Snowing heavily here , really nice to see.

Not much settling though apart from on favoured surfaces. Outlying areas no doubt will do much better!

Looked outside at 04.30hrs and the village has had a fall of snow overnight - 2-3 inches at a guess. Not actually snowing now but more is forecast.

3-4 inches here and still snowing but very light now.  Had the odd flurry around 10 pm, then nothing until around 1:30 am, when the heavy snow started.  Looks really lovely and we can deliver on a promise made to our two year old granddaughter.  Last night we told her we’d have a snowy walk in the park this morning.  Phew!  😁
