It seems to me that the whole feature is moving incredibly slow which is at odds with the revised warnings.

Certainly not producing snow up here in the north east despite the air temp not over 1C. Just cold rain with the odd small flake mixed in at times.

It's been raining all morning in Swansea, but it's now turning to snow. Wasn't expecting this but it's been heavy rain and not much wind, so assume it's evaporative cooling? I'm close to sea level so it perhaps bodes well for other areas.

Edit: slightly higher parts (50m plus) reporting the classic huge flakes you get in marginal situations

As for Thursday's PPN and the northern extent:

Arpege - Wrexham to Stoke to Nottingham to Grantham

GFS - Lancaster to York

Icon - initially Chester to Sheffield to Lincoln, but then pivots to spread snow to Manchester and Yorkshire

I need the GFS solution to be correct!!

Your commute could be interesting, or, knowing how fickle these events can be, it could be extremely boring. 😃 I’m using this as a right royal test for this model. GFS (para) too.

Yes as anticipated this morning the MetO automated forecast for my location has downgraded my rain-to-snow event to a rain-to-sleet event.

It's been alternating between light sleet and snow for a couple of hours here. Problem has been lack of intensity which has been frustrating to watch on the radar.

Seems to be a more sustained and heavier switch to snow now. Temp on the way down and hopefully the snow line too which is currently just above 200m.

Interesting you say that Q  and I hope your right because I just read the updated met warning and it reads as follows:-

Updated:

10:49 on Tue 29 Jan 2019 GMT

Reason for update

The start time of the warning has been brought forward to cater for some snowfall during peak travel times Tuesday evening and the expected amounts of snow have been reduced.

EDIT: Sorry didn't realise it had already been posted above.

I usually find the @LondonSnowWatch account on Twitter to be quite close to the mark with snow risk. East is best today:

This is the dividing line between the cold and milder air. Behind it colder air is undercutting and I would expect the precip to be mostly falling as snow (except in the SW, coasts, lighter bits e.c.t.). Ahead mostly rain at this stage.

This is the problem with cold occlusions. In fact, ironically, any front with 'cold' in it sucks when it comes to snow potential.

And this is one of the better ones!

Nevertheless it does seem most places are still going to see snow today. Going to be very wet though.

If only we had some decent cold air in place or a high to the north instead of this persistent low.
(Apologies for my if only moment)
Thurs pm looks much better for snow chances for a larger area.

Well for what it's worth there's a bit of sleet mixed with the rain here, not a lot but it's slowly changing. My guess is this band of precipitation will be mainly rain for here but may turn to snow for you guys further east. temperature is currently 3.7C which has dropped from 5.9c at 12:30pm. Good luck.

Raining heavily here in mid-Sussex. Now 3.5c after a high of 4.3c at 12:53pm. DP of 2c. Some sleet in the heavier bursts. The conditions look well set for something more than predicted after dark.

RE Thursday

ICON 12z pushes the front further north which is good IMBY - however the pennines begin to create a rain shadow effect. Still more time to resolve this.

Fingers crossed.
