It is utterly irresponsible that we are allowing 3000 fans from a Covid hotspot to arrive for a game in a stadium at the same time that the originating city is banning such events because of spread. Who in the hell is letting that happen. It is too late now as the damage is done as these people are already here, but it is utter madness.

Around here an increasing number of parents are voting with their feet and keeping their kids at home. If Boris doesn't close schools soon parents will do it for him. Better to look in control and get on with it.

That's quite right, Caz. We seldom have a "whole" picture of anything. We do not usually sample a "whole population", but make a statistical projection from an appropriate and representative data sample. It's the gathering of that sample that is underway and the reason we are sampling is to achieve that understanding - otherwise why would we bother? As you say, if you are going to get sick, you'll get sick, whether or not we test you. Testing tells us how far and where the virus has spread. Like any data, this will have it's limitations, but any reasonable data is better than none.

I can't guess which way Boris is going to jump. Will he put the lid on us this week or try to stall until next week? Every parent must be cursing!

Which countries can the director general of the WHO be talking about?

'Lack of resolve' in some countries, says WHO

Tedros says it is a “crisis that affects every sector”. The WHO director-general says:

This is everybody’s business.

He says looking at the number of cases reported and number of countries affected “doesn’t tell the full story”.

All countries can still change the course of this pandemic.

Swift action can prevent larger clusters and community transmission and even if they fail to do so “they can turn the tide”.

The challenge is not whether countries can change the course of the virus but whether they will, Tedros says.

He says come countries are struggling with a lack of capacity but says some are struggling with a lack of resolve.

I don't think the UK is doing too badly so far.  As he says, Governments had to "strike a fine balance between protecting health, minimising disruption and respecting human life".  That's the point I've been making consistently for several weeks.

Countries may soon consider letting it rip. They may decide the "winners" will be those who get back on their feet first. For example, Russia could seek advantage and vice versa.

The Italian figures are grim ... no getting around the fact. I sincerely hope that HMG's strategy works because if we get anything like those figures here, hospitals really will be overwhelmed in short order.

It would be very useful if they could also advise the medical states of those infected. Nothing too specific, just along the lines of:

1) Recovered

2) Mild symptoms; resting at home

3) Moderate symptoms; resting at home

4) Severe symptoms; being treated at home

5) Severe symptoms; being treated in hospital

6) In hospital ICU

I think it would help to quell the hysteria and panic that's building.

Those Italy’s figures really are grim.

The issue now is the Governement can say what they like, but people will be looking at the numbers from Italy and saying the government is not doing enough.

People will start to react themselves. Companies will react themselves (I suspect this is what HMG is waiting for). Panic buying followed by everybody just shutting themselves away. The lack of guidance from HMG on this is frightening. Are we heading toward a situation where HMG are so busy looking at the modelling that can't look out the window. Because that is what people will start to think.
