Need conference at 1610. Lockdown coming up?

I'm not sure it does me any good to read stuff like this. I'm trying to remind myself that lots of people have less severe symptoms.

As you say, the vast majority have much milder symptoms and won't experience what the other Darren's friend and those two doctors experienced. It doesn't do your mental health any good to read about those exceptional cases IMO!

I've seen suggestions that a pulse oximeter is a useful piece of kit to help monitor things if you get infected and develop COVID-19. A pulse oximeter monitors the blood oxygen saturation level (95% is considered normal for healthy people). They can be bought quite cheaply on Amazon. See the non-referral link below:

Furious Downing Street blasts claim that the PM's top aide Dominic Cummings once backed 'herd immunity' coronavirus strategy by saying 'if that means some pensioners die, too bad'

  • A furious No 10 threatened attacked Sunday Times allegation today

  • Paper claimed Cummings backed herd immunity idea in February

  • But suggested he changed mind to back a lockdown after new science emerged

  • Coronavirus symptoms: what are they and should you see a doctor?

Downing Street lashed out today at a report that Boris Johnson's top aide Dominic Cummings said the Government was prepared to sacrifice pensioner's lives to coronavirus to keep the economy afloat.

A furious No 10 hit out after the Sunday Times alleged that the powerful backroom powerbroker initially backed the controversial 'herd immunity' idea that sees the vast majority of the population contract the virus in order to build up natural resistance.

To add, it’s probably the case that accounts of what it’s like to have COVID-19 found online are likely to the ones which are more dramatic and unpleasant, especially those on news websites.

I must also add they were all absolutely fine after a couple of weeks.

What's quite clear is that the 5,000 confirmed cases in the UK is fiction. Since the tests are taking 5 days to come back, that probably means that the tests taken as of now will result in about 12,000 cases.

My friends and her family amount to 7 cases and none of them were tested. It must be that for every confirmed case, there are maybe 20 others where people are at home self-isolating with symptoms? That could mean we are already up to 250,000 cases. That's still less than 1% of the population, but given how many people I'm hearing of with it, that seems about right.

Went for a run this morning. One of those lovely early spring days here where the air temp is around freezing but the sun is starting to have some warmth.

Extremely quiet, almost no traffic. More birdsong than usual, although that may have been wishful thinking. Almost everyone practicing good social distancing - as soon as I saw anyone I either ran on the road for a while or crossed over. Don't think I was within 5m of another person the whole time. It feels unnatural to move away from someone when you see them approaching but a wave and a "good morning" usually offsets this.

Meanwhile:

Govt. expecting social distancing measures here to last "months" and police in some provinces being given the power to issue tickets for people flouting the rules.

The majority of the adults will be well educated and informed. If social distancing is struggling in an area like this it suggests to me the government will need to take stronger action urgently.

I'm going to try and do a run at 5:30am tommorow in the most secluded part of the neighborhood. It will still be darkish at that time but probably just light enough to see where I'm going.

Good explanation of viral load and how the severity of symptoms depends on the “dose” of the virus you receive.

It’s now understood that it’s a good idea to isolate from people who have the virus, even in the same house for this very reason.

From the Lancet paper by the Chinese doctors who reported on one of the first clusters of cases:

Common symptoms at onset of illness were fever (40 [98%] of 41 patients), cough (31 [76%]), and myalgia or fatigue (18 [44%]); less common symptoms were sputum production (11 [28%] of 39), headache (three [8%] of 38), haemoptysis (two [5%] of 39), and diarrhoea (one [3%] of 38). Dyspnoea developed in 22 (55%) of 40 patients (median time from illness onset to dyspnoea 8·0 days [IQR 5·0–13·0]). 26 (63%) of 41 patients had lymphopenia. All 41 patients had pneumonia with abnormal findings on chest CT. Complications included acute respiratory distress syndrome (12 [29%]), RNAaemia (six [15%]), acute cardiac injury (five [12%]) and secondary infection (four [10%]). 13 (32%) patients were admitted to an ICU and six (15%) died.

Vomiting not mentioned. Only 1 out of 41 with diarrhoea.

Trouble is there's a lot of other infections going the rounds. A lot of people with symptoms are convinced they've got it or had it, but there's no reliable way of telling for sure without being tested.

Doesn’t sound much fun does it Darren? I think the GI issues mentioned in that post are fairly rare aren’t they? I mention that because stupid as it may sound I have something of a phobia of vomiting, mainly because I have never done so since I was a child!

New cases and new deaths in Lombardy are lower today than yesterday

New cases are 2,590
New deaths are around 360

New deaths have fallen by at least 150 in 24-hours a glimmer for the region.

On a positive note the % increase in new cases is dropping in Spain - 25%, 22%, 19%, 18%, 12%. In Germany it is also dropping - 34%, 27%, 19%, 12%.

Overall figures in Europe, for the first time, offer a glimmer of hope of a slowdown. Not expecting to see similar here yet however, and the US seems out of control. Would expect it to be the worst hit country in the world within a week

It's a glimmer, from other European figures today, just a glimmer. We'll need several more days of downward trends before hope really is justified, IMO.

Popped into my local Tesco around 1.30pm today. Never seen it so quiet!

Only needed some tobacco and chilli powder. Grabbed some mince too. Plenty of fruit & veg, meat and bread available.

I'm torn because whilst these stories must cause people to worry there's also a need to get the message across to the idiots.
