I think one difference in Italy and Spain is the close contact that people have, even with strangers. It's not uncommon to kiss strangers on the cheek. My wife is from Argentina (father is Italian) and it's the same there. I wouldn't be surprised if Argentina also got it badly for this reason although they did go into "cuarentena" comparatively early.

It [Imperial College]estimates that at its peak Britain will experience more than 250 deaths a day, far fewer than the 1,300 a day expected in Italy. The scientists’ best guess for the total number of deaths is 5,700 in Britain, compared with fewer than 4,000 in China. They expect 28,000 deaths in Italy and that this will be overtaken by Spain, which on its present trajectory could suffer 46,000.

5700 deaths in total implies infection rates in the general population which I simply do not find credible.

I have finally got around to racking the 40 gallons of grape, elderberry and blackberry wine I made three years ago. The 10 gallons of grape wine is pretty good, the elderberry is drinkable during an apocalypse and the blackberry will do once you’ve drunk enough of the other two!


Plus the one litre of distilled hooch I made from homebrew cider five years ago and then put oak chippings in really hits the spot! It is 72% alcohol! And, yes, I know that home distilling is illegal but those regulations do not apply in this part of the world.

I’ve been drinking every single night since this crisis started unfolding. Nothing excessive and I’ve certainly not been drunk. 

However comfort food and alcohol is certainly helping me get through. I think as long as you’re having enough healthy additions such as fruit and veg then there’s no real issue with it.

Oddly, biscuits, Mars bars, crisps  (etc) don't seem to have been panic bought -  I was in the local shop for local people on Thursday and the shelves were still loaded with them !  Couldn't get any fresh fruit though  and there wasn't much fresh veg - managed to get some mushrooms to go this my steak though.

Meanwhile in Durham, there are numerous independent shops where you can order stuff. I had a search yesterday, found a local greengrocer, and have 40 quids' worth of fresh fruit and veg coming this afternoon!


Cheese and yoghurt are the things that are problematic. My yoghurt has run out. Cheese - got about 2 weeks' worth left. Could order fancy stuff but very expensive. Supermarket seems only place to get basic cheddar for the kids. Main issue with the yoghurt is that without it, it's hard to find something to eat my chia seeds with... the lot of the middle classes.

Popped into  our local chemist a week or so ago  for some odds and sods for The Folks and  I was in a queue of 1 !  The woman behind the counter said she  had  received all kinds of bizarre enquires over the 'phone but she wouldn't elaborate - Could be some  Social media quack remedies are doing the rounds ?

I'm hoping that after this, and using the cash-starved NHS as a figurehead, there's a renewed campaign by tax justice groups to flag how millionaires and billionaires dodge paying their fair share of tax through use of offshoring, trusts and other loopholes.

That's an interesting one. Not all millionaires dodge things by setting up trusts and offshoring, indeed I know a couple who don't. Similarly, I know of at least one that has set up a trust for their family, thus dodging tax. The others I'm not sure about.


(Remember, as of a couple of years ago at least, 20% of pensioners are millionaires!
