We’ve just got back from shopping in Morrison’s and it wasn’t at all unpleasant.  They were letting people in at a good distance apart and there were only a dozen in the queue, so we got in quickly.  In the foyer there were rolls of paper wipes and cleaning spray to wipe basket and trolley handles, which I think they should provide all the time!


All shelves looked well stocked, even loo rolls, which I don’t need and haven’t bought at all during the panic frenzy.  I generally buy such items in bulk and already had enough.  There were quite a few reduced items in the fresh food isles as well.  Wine was restricted to 3 bottles, so I got 3 bottles of Rioja.  Although at the checkout, the woman said the restriction has now been lifted.

Actually, it goes down nicely with everything!  We have a glass with our evening meal when it’s not a school night, which are non existent for either of us at the moment.

 I bought 3 bottles of Merlot at Tesco's early this morning but was admonished by the cashier who told me 2 bottles maximum. Felt like a little schoolboy (but they were out of stock )

I'm also just back from my daily exercise. On it I pondered whether the very high number of deaths in Italy and Spain could be indirectly climate related. Is there a possibility that people in southern Europe catch fewer colds than those of us in the cold and wet north? If that is the case (no idea if it is) perhaps they consequently have a lower level of immunity to corona viruses in general? Does anyone know if this has been discussed?

I agree. There seems to have been some optimism pumped into the some of the media overnight from government sources. I am all for positive news, but  we also need more realistic messaging.


I fear you will be correct. I can’t see death numbers peaking at a max of 250. I fear it will be significantly more based on yesterday’s numbers and the number of new cases we have reported in the last three days alone.

Have you tried the Grapevine Merlot from Aldi?  It’s only about £3.69 and it’s got a nice smooth, deep fruity flavour (I should say palate as we’re being connoisseurs).

Yes, I got the impression, a couple of ‘useful idiots’ (mainly James Forsyth) were fed some talking points to spread around Twitter last night.  They seem to bear no relation to anything mentioned by the experts in the 5pm briefing, so I’m ignoring them as another Cummings invention.


I can easily see us approaching 250 deaths a day by early next week, sadly.

Plus the one litre of distilled hooch I made from homebrew cider five years ago and then put oak chippings in really hits the spot! It is 72% alcohol! And, yes, I know that home distilling is illegal but those regulations do not apply in this part of the world.

Coronavirus: UK wary of international market for ventilators


A frenetic international market in ventilators and medical supplies has gathered pace in recent weeks as governments scramble to purchase equipment.


Prices for equipment have been rocketing - often changing by the hour.


The equipment is usually made in China and is then purchased by middlemen who offer it on.


But the UK has so far tried to avoid purchasing from some of the intermediaries offering equipment.


The market price for one particular type of ventilator increased in a week from $27,000 (£21,700) to $96,000 (£77,100) - a sign of just how intense the demand is.

Having said that I do like Waitrose, they have some very nice things but I would only ever shop with a basket.
